Not sure it's acting rather than simply Tom enjoying dressing up playing a nazi and the uniform suiting him. Can see how Katie was kept in line til she made her bid for freedom.

What has Tom Cruise acted in rather than just playing Tom Cruise? He's great in A Few Good Men but again he playing Tom Cruise at the end of the day. Ditto Jerry Maguire. Top Gun. Cocktail.

I'd like to see him tackle Chekhov at the Wyndham... or maybe Shakespeare at the Globe.

Great actors? Lawrence Olivier?

Daniel Day Lewis, Orson Wells.

What about Peter Sellers in Dr Strangelove? Playing the Dr and the President in the same scene. Genius.

Tom Hanks is certainly up there?

But being s screen idol doesn't make someone a great actor, often they are paid vast sums to be themselves as opposed to a character.

Oh forgot Tom Cruise cameo in Tropic Thunder was genius lol

I thought he was fantastic playing both Kray brothers in legend, but as the question was greatest actor of all time,my vote is for Sir Lawrence Olivier.

Dunno bout the greatest ...

But I do like Leonardo dicaprio films , he adapts so well to each and every role he's portrayed

Tom hardy is also good too , aswell as easy on the eye, so in agreement there

I'd agree with most of the names mentioned so far. Old school names to add for me would be Spencer Tracey, Jimmy Stewart and Sydney Poitier. More "recent" names would be Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ben Kingsley and Kevin Spacey

It's Gary Oldman, what a range of characters he has played! Just disappears into every character he takes on.

The colour of money with one of the best actors Paul Newman. Him and cruise were brilliant

Meryl Streep for her diversity of roles

And as for Cruise showing diversity look at him in tropic thunder... brilliant even though I don't like him generally as an actor

Has nobody mentioned Clint Eastwood? Brilliant actor, great in so many films, admittedly some very similar roles. Loved Heartbreak Ridge.

A younger actor I had no time for but have warmed to after his Sherlock role is Robert Downey Jr. Plays the part brilliantly in fairness.
