My work colleague was taken today from work by gardai/immigration officers for questioning. She is under suspicion that she accepted marriage proposal for money, from a certain Pakistani gentleman, really not good looking one. I've read that there is a task force that investigates these set-up marriages but haven't seen if they are illegal or what? Since this is really open country there must be a lot of it. Anybody seen anything like it? Any of you got a similar offer? |

"I thought it was mostly men that bought wife's. "
The case here is to get the papers/passports. The woman I mentioned is not Irish but still an EU citizen |

Common form of trafficking migrants. Difficult to prove but also risky for the one who gets into it. What if he is an awful chauvinist or insist after marriage to consume the same and the marriage was supposed to be fake. Really messy.....
Thank good I got my visa in the meantime |

very serious , you can be jailed for this offence if it is shown that the marriage was a sham . There is a trade in eastern europeans doing this for money so that the immigrant can secure an e u famiy card , this card offers more rights of movement and benefits than an immigrant marrying an irish national ! G N I B are aware of this and are tasked with making enquiries into all marriages in the state pertaining to non nationals . |

Without being racist, we should protect our people. If you fall in love and it's true, go for it, regardless of race/religion/nationality.
I've no respect for anyone involved in illegal marriage in Ireland! Sorry but this is abhorrent to me! |

In a lot of ways i don't see the harm provided both fully agree and it's not to suck the welfare system but simply freedom to work and live a better quality of life.
Why should we have freedom of movement when others don't by nature of their birthplace?

mines not a high and mighty attitude , i married a non national in 1991 and had a 20 yr marriage . I know how immigration works here ,things are vastly different now than then , but it has always been the case that if you marry a non national that you can be interviewed by garda and immigration at any point . |

Its been happening for years here in Northern Ireland and the PSNI have a dedicated task force to invesrigate it. TV cameras accompanied the PSNI to live weddings in regisyer offices here and filmed as the police arrested them WeeBearWilly reporting from Belfast.... |

I'm drinking in Marbella, so temper your responses.
I work in a very multicultural environment, a call centre that is regarded highly, both for the management and the staff, all of which is multicultural and would not be as good if it weren't for the mix of cultures/opinions/attitudes/perspectives.
So, I feel I have a right to comment here.
People are welcome in Ireland. Yes, you can't go anywhere in the world without finding an Irish bar. Note that we arrived in those countries to work, not conquer it, like others. We arrived as a result of less opportunity at home, or a desire to see other parts of the world, work there, pay local taxes and get involved in the community.
Anyone arriving in Ireland with similar sentiments, I welcome with open arms and a pint of Guinness.
Any scumbag trying to get in by illegal means, to advance others to do the same, to be here and not accept Irish culture as the culture of the country they are now living in, to use marriage as a method only, where no love is involved, FUCK OFF, get out and try that shit elsewhere.
Rant potentially over! |

Why would anyone want to retread the mistakes of the past?
I'm happy to say that the women are empowered enough now to kick our bollix off if we tried.
Well, not nearly enough yet but I reckon they'd make a good fist of it nowadays.
Oi! I didn't mean fist that way, ya manky feckers! |
