Face Book freak out

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Ok so I woke up this morning to a friend request from a guy I used to chat to on here a while back. I have recently told him I've no intention in meeting and now only reply politely to any messages.,.

He does not know my real name, where I live, work or my phone number. So how on earth did he find me!!!?

Now I have fab friends on my face book but they are trusted friends not randomers!

I'm not sure if I should just completely ignore this request of give him a piece of my mind on kik. What would you do ?

I hate when that happens, and to b honest it makes them look like creeps which he sounds like.

If u have just one friend in common it comes up on suggested friends. Block the fucker

Freaky shit. Is it possible he recognised you if he saw your face?

Facebook can be linked to your phone, so if you have someone's number from 'fabland' on the same phone you access Facebook it'll presume you're 'friends' and will provide you with that persons profile as a suggested friend to add.

I've come across this quite a few times but wouldn't act on it (send a friend request).

If you had his number at one time it will suggest you and vice versa...if a friend is linked somehow it does the same

Dont ever put a phone number on Facebook. There is already way too much info there already.

If you have your number there and someone here has it too, they can look you up.

Facebook is your worst enemy, sucks all your personal data available. Just don't do Facebook, it's poison!!! or at least never allow Facebook access to contacts, photos, location etc and put all your settings as private as possible. And simply ignore that bloke.

No I've never had his number or him mine.

A friend on here just told me he thinks if you use fab and face book from your mobile they can link up. I seriously hope not!

It's making me think fab isn't secure, I only give my personal details to ppl I feel like I can trust and they are few and far between.

Just worried now as he will know my name, where I work and town I live in. I've devises ignoring his message is best bet we don't want to fuel the fire !

Facebook exists to gather information.

I use face book for my business so can't delete but it's pretty secure to be honest... He either just come across a pic and recognized me or he is a full blown looper. Hopefully number 1!

Mine is fairly well locked down, only people I accept as a friend can see my info/pics etc.

Unfortunately your profile/cover pic is open to everyone

I regularly get friend suggestions of people I recognise as beings swingers, I'd say it's over 20 people by now. I don't have my phone number on face book so it's online activity it's tracking. I find a usual giveaway is that you have no Facebook friends in common.

Just don't acknowledge the invite or confirm that he has correctly contacted the person he had spoken to online.

A face pic reverse search could have lead to your Facebook page too.....don't use the same face pics on Facebook and here, also remember once you posted a face pic on Facebook timeline it will always be out there for ever and ever, even when you delete it from your time line.

This had happened to me too...

My number is not contacted in any way to Facebook...

Is it because we might have their numbers on our phone?

I think it's possibly down to ip addresses but that's probably paranoia...

Has happened to me too. Someone on here was able to tell me my surname. I don't have my phone number on fb and my phone doesn't even have a camera on it let alone get internet! I've no idea how I came up in their suggested list. Luckily they're not nuts.

If you have Facebook open and running either on your phone or you laptop, it looks at where else you're logged in. It sends you ads about things you've searched on Google, so it probably sees fab activity too and stores that info for later use.

Having said that, I don't think I've ever had fab people suggested to me on Facebook, even though I'm friends with a select few fabbers there too. I never sync or allow Facebook, or any other app access to my contact list.

I have fab friends on facebook, but they're people I trust. The thing is, you can't control who they're friends with so if they befriend someone from fab, that means they're one degree of separation away from your private life.

That's too close for my liking so I lock my profile down, and pre-emptively block some on facebook too.

Did you ever swap numbers with him? Facebook now uses your phone contacts and even Whatsapp groups you are in to make suggestions.

This old chestnut.

If you access sites especially from your smartphone it starts to link people and sites together. You would be amazed what it already knows about you and the scary bit is you have given your permission for it to do so.

While you might not have your phone number linked to an account that does not mean that facebook is forming potential links in the background.

If you go and look at the app and see what you have allowed them to look at you will be horrified. It can search your contacts, track your movements, access your camera and mic, read your texts and emails. Just being in the same location as someone can be enough for it to suggest potential friends if it sees you have something else in common so for example you access fab while at a meet and greet and it sees someone else doing that it starts the links forming.

Keeping everything locked down to friends only and keeping all pics seperate is a start but basically if you use the site or any site you are being tracked. So the trick is to keep Fab and real life as far apart as you can and ideally on a seperate device and make sure that you never access your real life from your fab device and vice versa.

You only have to do it once to make a connection. Once the connection has been made its very difficult to reverse it.

I dont do facebook for this reason and have not for over 3 years now after seeing what they can do when in their headquarters in Dublin.

They exist to sell advertising. They are not there to give you a platform to communicate with people only. They exist to sell stuff, and when you clicked on i agree on the app you allowed them to invade your life.

Be afraid ...

Be very afraid ...

I have my Facebook account completely locked down. Posts, photos and friends list aren't available to the general public. I also removed myself from search results.

I only have one fab friend and I don't like their pics or comment as someone could find me that way.

I've never seen a fabber in my suggested friends list either.

I often have friend suggestions come up on my facebook. Often with no friends in common. I wouldn't know if they were fabbers or not. I don't look at them tho

Have you checked your Google settings?

There is a setting, tucked away neatly, called Do Not Track. Make sure this is activated.

It is automatically off so when you use Google it can track everything you do online.

Absolutely everything.

It will make suggestions, based on your web activity, to different websites.

Find the Do Not Track and activate it.

It's just another small way to protect yourself online.

I don't think fab allows data to be handed over to third party cookies. It sounds to me like some good old fashioned NSA level stalking. If he has your friends name. Then he may be looking down their friends list to see who he can recognise.

Scarey and creepy stuff

Maybe he knew the identities of two of your fab Facebook friends. He could then have viewed the friendship of the two people to see their mutual friends

It's a very simple url that can be obtained online, something like putting Facebook/ the two peoples usernames with +and= Between them

I know this tactic has be used before to find out workers in places , when you know the name of 2
