God bless all those poor young men who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom which we enjoy today. I especially think of the men from the Republic of Ireland who were brave enough to answer the call. The 16th Irish devision suffered comparable losses at the somme as the 36th Ulster devision and the Royal enniskilling fusiliers. But those of the 16th Irish devision who survived the war were treated to a traitors welcome when they came home and have only recently been recognised as the Hero's they were.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them. |

it was a terrible war 1000000+ people died so the battle lines could move 16 miles. and the resulting treaty and its harshness caused the rise if the nazi party in Germany a lot of good men died for very little |

As James Connolly said in 1914 at the start of world war 1..."if those men must die, would it not be better to die in their own country fighting for freedom of their class, and for the abolition of war, than to go forth to strange countries and die slaughtering and slaughtered by their brothers that tyrants and profiteers might live"...over a hundred years on and those words still so accurate... |

Also on the 18th September 1914 in woodenbridge Co Wicklow John Redmond (a nationalist leader) told the volunteers heading to fight in Europe that " the interests of Ireland-The whole of Ireland- are at stake in this war. this war is undertaken in the defence of the highest principles of religion, morality and right". |

Funny every side believes they hold the morality compass...and I love the way you call them volunteers, the vast majority were starving and had no other option due to the British crowns occupation of their lands...but as a Irish republican I do few them as heroes, they took the only option open to them to feed their families..so we will agree on that. |

If they hadn't answered the call and done their bit to repel the advancing German war machine the "British crowns occupation of their lands" would have been the least of their worries. |

Seriously? Is that where you want to go with this? Small minds and keyboards make a bad mixture. |

Can we please stop b*tching about it and show some respect. My great grand father didn't make it home from that war. Men went for many different reasons from all over the world to fight a war that should never have been fought. It was my honour to travel to France and Belgium to visit many of the battle fields, memorials, towers and graveyards etc. I didn't make it to the somme sadly but it's just one of many.
The lucky ones got a grave, many more were blown to pieces or lost under rubble etc. I saw many names on graves from all over, many irish names on Canadian, Australian, new Zealand and so on. When visiting a German cemetery i noted some Jewish graves, an enemy's bullet doesn't care what religion you are or your reasons for being there.
May they rest in peace. |

Personal opinion.
I believe this was one of the most ludicrous wars ever fought with none of the leadership on any side giving a damn for the cannon fodder that was sent out to be obliterated. Having said all that, and I say this also as an Irish republican, the courage of these young lads, both orange and green, was exemplary and should be honoured. |

I redilly accept that thousands of men on this date 100 years ago gave their lives so I can enjoy my life as I know it. If you don't then that's your prerogative. But it was You who came to this thread with your sectarian hatred not me.

Paddy stop fighting with Billy and Billy stop fighting with Paddy.
Both of you are acting like children. Stop with the name calling, it leads to trouble. |

"Whether or not one agrees with the causes of and reasons for the Great War and shares the views of those whose ancestors fought in it, everyone's dead are entitled to be treated with respect."
You're absolutely right |

That's exactly what I was trying to do in my first post. If It didn't come across like that and I antagonised anyone then I Appologise. |
