I don't think it's a solely southern expression. I have friends from Coleraine who use it all the time. It's not derogatory just a reference to the person you're talking too, like mate of buddy. Though that's with an Irish twist since AFAIK it's derived from shambolic. So it would be mate in a state, in its original use. |
