Because they are loyal and are indeed your best friend!!!
Each dog has a unique character!!
Anybody who knows me know I love dogs, I have sent photos to prove that to some lol!!!

Dog lover too I have two and they are like my children one is an old lady 14 yrs old and the other 10. If anything happened them I'd die. Don't like cats no loyalty.also I love baby elephants so cute. |

A long time ago I crashed into my husband's car and he went apeshit at me! So to apologise he bought me a miniture yorkie..my marriage lasted 6 months and the dog lasted 17 yrs!! |

Anyone have any tips for how to deal with a dog I recently 'rescued', well she was dumped and I took her in.
She gets on great with my other dog but keeps trying to bite my small humans. She's about 6 months old and is really lovely but I can't have that. I find disciplining her difficult as she is still a bit nervous and I don't want to frighten her any more than she has been already. |

The dog is showing aggression because she's nervous and wasn't socialized
More nervous with kids cause they on same eye level as the dog. Never leave dog alone with kids
She's only 6 months so start to try to socialize her with other dogs and kids ASAP should help a lot
And only use gentle positive re enforcement as discipline . A firm hand with a nervous dog only makes them worse |

I wouldn't do that laid unless dog was socialised first
Dog has told owner already in her own way that she doesn't like children,if you force her to be near them even on lead and with treats she will bite |

I always liked dogs as a child we had a dog as a pet and when about 25 i got a sheep dog best friend i every had he was a very kind dog and was so friendly. As the saying goes i would troust a dog that didnt like a person but would not troust a person that did not like a dog. |

Great fun topic...
I had a Presa Canario (mastiff bread) mix for 13 & 1/2 years.
She was my best friend but passed away in September 2014. I got her at 3 weeks old in Spain. Lived there for years and there was no way I was leaving her there.
One story springs to mind....
Walking along the coast road on the way home. She had already had four dinosaur size poops so I thought it was safe. 25kilo dog.
Crossing the road with a restaurant on the corner, sunny day, people sitting outside and a car stops to allow me to cross. Great.
She decides to stop in the middle of the road in front of the car and customers and drop the biggest Shit that I've ever seen.
Totally embarrassed but everyone was laughing
We rescued a Staffie a month after she passed away.

Good advice here. Only to add...she's young and the sooner you get her to socialise with kids the better...It won't take long for her to relax enough then.

Are these playful bites or is she aggressively snapping at kids?
Never leave the dog alone with kids or she will bite and do damage
Socialising is getting her used to all kids and not just your own. Lots of walks in public and parks and make her at ease by reassuring her if she shows signs of nervousness or aggression
She just might not suit a house with kids but she's young enough to try and change her ways
But until she does I stress don't leave her alone with kids. Sounds like she is giving you repeated warnings and a fearful dog is the most likely to bite

Thanks Hal. No it's not playful, we have always had dogs from puppies and I know the difference between puppies playing and this. It seems like she's trying to tell the smaller kids that she's the boss. She's in contact with lots of kids but unfortunately just doesn't seem happy about it. I'm sad to say it but it's looking like a home with children is not for her.
Not leaving her alone with the kids isn't going to be a option once the school holidays start as the kids want to be outside and it's very difficult to be outside with them all of the time.
It's very sad because she's a little dote and after a rough start in life we just wanted to give her a happy home. |

I had a Presa Canario (mastiff bread) mix for 13 & 1/2 years.
She was my best friend but passed away in September 2014. I got her at 3 weeks old in Spain. Lived there for years and there was no way I was leaving her there.
One story springs to mind....
Walking along the coast road on the way home. She had already had four dinosaur size poops so I thought it was safe. 25kilo dog.
Crossing the road with a restaurant on the corner, sunny day, people sitting outside and a car stops to allow me to cross. Great.
She decides to stop in the middle of the road in front of the car and customers and drop the biggest Shit that I've ever seen.
Totally embarrassed but everyone was laughing
We rescued a Staffie a month after she passed away.

Sorry I had to laugh at this, the part where she poo'd in the middle of the road & of course it would have to the biggest shit just to embarrass you further pmsl!!!! |

Grew up with a collie. Best dog I ever had but highly strung
I couldn't train my guy for anything on til I got him hooked on a toy to focus him and use for reward. He didn't go mad for treats because he was eating tasty raw meat every day
Can just try walking him around kids in public with you very much in control. No kids touching dog at first even. After while when she shows signs of relaxing around them a little then have the kids introduce the treats to her. Little by little with more treats then kids can start touching dog
Only reason she biting kids for treats now is she still nervous around them
And at all times you be seen by the dog to be in control so she will develope trust in you first that you will protect her ifshe in trouble so her first reaction won't be to bite

Such is my love for dogs, at The National Concert Hall a good number of years ago I once went over to a sniffer dog to pet him, it was obvious he was there to do a job....... there wasn't a bother on him lol!!!!  |

Just thinking now about a recent incident with our current dog.
A rescue Staffie. She's about 2&1/2yrs old.
I had her in the local for last orders on a weekday a few weeks ago.
I had just taken a sip of my pint, placed it back on the table and she not only burped but let out a ripper of a fart!
All eyes turned to me needless to say.
A few seconds later the amount of people heading to the door for a cigarette was not only embarrassing but funny in hindsight
They all thought it was me!! |

Guy goes to football match with wife and dog..before he goes in he puts wife and dog in the boot then goes to the match...
Comes out 3 hours later and opens the boot only 1 of them is gona be haopy to see him. 1 of them is foaming at the mouth and snarling at him..the other is wagging its tail and wants to go for a walk |

Okay those of you following this thread will have possibly read the story of my dog that passed away and how one day she stopped in the middle of the road in front of a packed inside and out seafront restaurant.....and harder biggest shit that I've ever seen to this day!
Well I'm just back from sitting outside said restaurant having a beer with our Staffie sitting perfectly balanced on my two legs.....when I felt a really warm feeling on my right leg.
Tables either side have punters.
The warmest smelliest fart is what that feeling was.
Silent but violent! And the looks and whispers were shocking.

"Okay those of you following this thread will have possibly read the story of my dog that passed away and how one day she stopped in the middle of the road in front of a packed inside and out seafront restaurant.....and harder biggest shit that I've ever seen to this day!
Well I'm just back from sitting outside said restaurant having a beer with our Staffie sitting perfectly balanced on my two legs.....when I felt a really warm feeling on my right leg.
Tables either side have punters.
The warmest smelliest fart is what that feeling was.
Silent but violent! And the looks and whispers were shocking.

Just reading about a Great Dane called Charlie who just died in Clare . 5 year old daughter of the family has autism and epileptic and Charlie developed a very close bond with her,of course,and could tell 20 mins before she had fit that it was coming and alerted the family.
The sixth sense is amazing but so is the bond he formed with the girl,he knew she was special and needed him |

Aww that's really sad for the girl especially when there was such a close bond & Charlie helped the girl get through her ordeals by alerting the family in time....

Spaniels are working dogs used to hunting so he just needs lots of exercise and toys to keep him stimulated.
