Theres a fine line between athletic and slim i think....im actually a mixture of all body types these days depending on the lighting ....but really...if youre athlethic you should look like an athelete...and long distance runners, sprinters and people in the special olympics all look totally different....id say a sprinter would be the ideal image of athletic more though. |

"Just for the balance. Are you athletic when you're a member of a gym or when you look like Arnold Schwarzenegger, or when you've a six pack? " I'm perfect example of what your looking for.

Dart players not athletes? Some trades men that never see the inside of a gym or compete may be in better shape than the regular players.
Should be able to put body type as 'rugby player', that way you know I have big arms and legs as well as a big ass!

Most of my friends are runners from track to marathon. They are generally slim though alot do weights and HIT so are very well defined. This I'd describe as athletic. I run a lot and have marathon endurance but I don't describe myself as athletic. |

Hmmm. I consider an athletic man someone who is physically strong with endurance and lean.
A lot of people are describing ripped as athletic.
I lived with a guy that was ripped very low bodyfat looked impressive. But he was very weak. I use to laugh when he couldn't open jars yet 5 minutes beforehand was bragging about his body.
What good is a Ferrari with no engine.
Its pretty to look at but a shit ride lol.
A lot of very low body fat guys are not strong at all. They simply have low body fat percentage.
I alternate between cutting and bulking my body fat percentage as part of my training schedule. For competition.
My definition to class yourself as an athletic man is as follows:
Be able to:
Interval running 5k
20 consecutive body weight slow rep pull-ups and chin-ups and a 100 squats back to back and military press 80% his body weight and bench 120+ kg for 8 reps.
But everyone is different and entitled to be. |

Ha think you hit that right on haha ??????. I know some guys in great shape but could not last in either cardio or high reps more than 8-10 . There has to be a balance with training .
We need females opinions thou ???????? |

I have clients I train who are athletic. They have low body fat. Toned and conditioned muscle definition. Very good cardio vascular endurance and very good stamina. They are extremely fit in their sport.
I have clients who train for building muscle mass with biceps bigger than my tighs who would cough up a lung running for the bus. They are just interested in building muscle for competition but they are athletic.
I have 1 client who is a barrel of a man, weighs 22 stone, eats crap and drinks pints every weekend. He's an athletic power lifter for his country.
These 3 categories are all athletic but for fab reasons I think the first one best describes it and it's the healthiest. |

^ all of the above^ except the jogging, long walks and Zumba. It's Football, football, football for me. 5 aside Tuesday's, Thursday's and the odd Monday, GAA on a Wednesday and a 11 aside Saturday or Sunday morning. All followed by a skin full of alcohol directly after. Lads rule 101,,,,, football = pints after... Standard!!!!! |

I'd consider myself very athletic. I lift, run and just eat very cleanly. I used to want to be bigger but it just ain't happening so I focus health and the lowest body fat I can manage.

22 stone isn't athletic in my eyes neither is an obsessed body builder but I see where you coming from.
This post actually the whole thread and the curvy one too prove that the whole body descriptions are completely useless because the definitions vary so widely but also it's down to how a person sees him/herself. |

2 examples I use for men I use. Disregarding looks would you like Ryan Reynolds body or Dwane the Rock Johnsons body. Both with shirts on, the Rock looks ridiculous.Reynolds looks ordinary.Shirts off Reynolds looks far better and healthier. Rock still looks ridiculous. Everyone picks Reynolds. Men and women |

"If your resting heart rate is below 55 bpm, you are athletic." sorry but that is not true, genetics and age are factors as regards Resting heart rate. There are athletes with higher than 55 and non athletes with lower

There are exceptions to every rule, I understand that. What would you recommend VO2 Max? The (unclear) point I was making was "athletic" has more to do with fitness than body shape. I think you would agree. |

I'd agree, I've always looked thin or fit to some people but couldn't kick snow off a rope at times. |

Love it that men seem to be worse than fighting over a definition of shape
Guys with abs slag off big strong guys then big guys say abs are overrated
Athletic - Strong,fit & active
That comes in all sizes but you guys fights for that attention lol... |

I don't have a 6 pack or lift any weights but I don't have a whole lot of body fat either thankfully but I do have an higher level of endurance than most. Most would probably look at me as being fairly average if they didn't see me doing my thing.
The resting heart rate is only a guide as it depends on how high you can push your heart at 100% effort and for how long. Fpt testing is a good indication of what sort.of shape you are in.
If you look after yourself exercise regularly and keep your weight under control then you will probably be more likely to tend towards being an athletic shape. |

I think ye all need to quit going on about heat rate, and how much you can run, when you last did an egg and spoon race blah blah blah...its about body type, as in what it looks like, not whether youre an actual athletic person or not. Do you look athletic or not? Jesus, its not a difficult question |

I think the question was " What's an athletic man" not what does an athletic man look like so while it's not a difficult question you did misunderstand it. I don't consider myself athletic but I could cycle 200k in one sitting. Gym a few times a week when the suits me but I have to much going on to waste my days looking at myself in the mirror willing on my sixpack. I did in the past but those days are long gone. The definition of an athlete "a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise" so you are proficient in your field then by all accounts you are an athlete six pack or not. Now all you have to do is define proficient |

Nobody going to call BS on the 'bench press sets of 120kg'?
An advanced lifter should be doing sets 130% his body weight. Thats an advanced lifer not a 'guy doing it once a week on chest day'. So if your 15 stone (95kg) then 120 is ballpark your max rep weight.
If your a regular fit athletic 4 work outs a week guy? You'll be well under the 100 kg. much more likely to be in the 70-90 range.
Athletic for a swinger is like 'curvy' - you know it when you see it. |

"Athletic on fab is used to describe your body type not your fitness level"
I think there lies the problem on fab. The body type they ask you to tick on here is asking how people would see you when they meet you and not how you see yourself. Well that's what I think.
Sometimes we see ourselves in a negative way and probably not feeling our best and that can reflect. I've seen men and women tick average or large and they are far from it when you meet them in person. I've seen others very confident with their body shape and describe themselves in a let's say more positive and flattering way and fair play on the confidence but it can be a little misleading.
It's a touchy subject for a lot but no one deserves the horrible comments thrown around in a status or in the forum whatever your body type. It's poor form.
When in doubt go for average
