Thank you " you can buy a fan whick sits under the laptop blowing cool air into it also put hoover near vents and clear any dust as this stops it drawing air ps don't put hoover too close x |

"Kaizer you rascal
You know well lion is too big to fit in there
But your wittiness always makes the king of the cats grin"
Perhaps a custom made Lion size igloo equipped with internal cooling system, WiFi, and water fountain |

You could try some canned air and that might be a temporary solution. Otherwise have somebody open the fan and clean any debri, dust etc from it.
It's a tricky job. But somebody with a small bit of the know how should be able to carefully open and close it again. |

Lion's said laptop needs it's dust sucked...but sucking isn't recommended due to static...so blowing is preferred method....then said laptop will feel cool again. |

"Most of the time it's dust buildup on the fan cowles. Shut it down and Hoover out the fans. DONT do it when it's running. correct a good hover or air blown into vents cures problem "
DO NOT HOOVER! Static may cause me nor loss...at worse could be wiped...at minimal could damage the ram memory. |

Depending on the heatsink/fan you need to clean off the old thermal compound paste from the contact point of the CPU chip and fan. I'm not sure which laptop you have but bang a search into youtube and you should find out how to put in new thermal past which will or should stop the CPU overheating and shutting down. I did it with my xps and worked a treat. Oh and don't mistake battery heat for CPU heat. hope that helps |

Lion, laptops are usually awkward to open & some skill is needed as you will have to practically dismantle it to get to the CPU (which is where the thermal grease goes) so it may be better to leave it with an IT shop to have it cleaned thoroughly, they can also backup your files & do a fresh install so it will feel like new when you get it back. If you are going to attempt to open it, at least go on the popular video website and watch how to do it first. |

Good point. I do a lot of pc repairs/hard drive replacements in work but it's definitely not my area of expertise. I chance fixing my own but if your not sure and it's a laptop you hope to keep then let a pro do it |

Warning
===================
If its getting hot enough to shut down the laptop. You need to fix it ASAP
because the laptop processor is being damaged to the point its life span is being shortened considerably.
=================================
Some decent advice here also some bad advice. I fix this problem regularly.
A lot depends on your laptop model.
It could be even a senor malfunction but i doubt that from your description.
What is your model number lion. With that i can give you the besr course of action. |

Advent good they are easy enough to open. I have shown loads of people how to do this its not that scary.
You will need Philips screw driver don't use a flat head. Some black duct tape.
A can of compressed air. A guitar pick
Here is a link with detailed instruction on how to open an advent laptop.

here is a link to show you the fan cleaning process.

While you have the laptop open I would strongly advise you to replace the thermal compound on the cpu and the bridge if it has thermal compound on it as well.
Use a good quality Silver based compound quicksilver is good.
Here is a link to a guide.

"If you need pointers Lion let me know."
Great advice and great with the links to follow also.. after all that i would check the processes etc see if there are things going on in the background causing the machine to be over worked etc.. good rule of thumb Lion is if you're using the laptop when its plugged it.. take the battery off it.. |

Oh.. and if you do go down the route of opening it.. do it in a room where you are not walking along carpet.. and before you touch the inside of the laptop on the board.. touch something metal to discharge your bodies static electricity. |
