I see there is going to be a new proposed plan to tackle obesity in ireland by introducing pe as a leaving cert subject! I think this would be a great thing. What about you?

Think it's a great idea too. Young people need to be educated in how to look after their bodies be it healthy eating or exercise. Says me and I trying to lose weight!!

It would be great for people who arent obese, but what about people who maybe have been obese all through school...theyre the target but aint gonna pick it if theyre gonna fail it being marked on phizical ability against fitter kids....tryna pass the leaving on the theory side alone....bit hey who knows....it could be a great plan...id just say the fitter people that might wanna work in a gym or sports would be the ones taking it....and theyre not the obese type anyway so it wouldnt be doing a whole lot for obecity in ireland.

As with most things, attitudes to exercise and healthy eating are largely influenced by parents.

While it is laudable to attempt to address the problem through schools, hopefully it won't simply serve to make teachers bear the bulk of the responsibility.

on the hill NordWest of

Mens sana in corpore sano. Yes it's a good idea and it should have always been a possible leaving cert subject in school. It might not do much for kids who have weight issues in their early stage of life but that shouldn't be a reason not to introduce it. Ireland has one of the highest overweight rates in Europe and steadily growing, so nothing should be left out to tackle the issue.

i know a child in a school and they're morbidly obese. It's sad to see. No interest in physical activity and eats all the wrong foods on a constant basis
