It doesn't matter if it's here or anywhere as awareness is important. Sorry to hear about your loss. It's tragic that some people find the only solution is to take their own life. Tragic |

After losing a 3rd friend of mine to suicide it's made me wonder how are suicide rates increasing when mental health and suicide awareness is one of the most talked about topics in Ireland in recent years? Is there a reason behind this increase ? |

I can't answer that sorry but I do know that we cannot anticipate someone else's reaction to events in their lives, only be there to support them and not turn a blind eye |

I lost 2 of cousins (were brothers ) within month of each other to suicide and seen the funerals of many other young men who seem to give up. A lot of the time there is no reason, everything will have seemed fine but that is the nasty thing about depression. Some people can hide it very well until it is to late. This is why people in Ireland especially Men need to talk to someone when they feel depressed. Nobody should feel ashamed of asking for help now and again nobody's perfect. Also if u see a friend or family member who may be depressed you should try and offer support, which most times will be just to be there to talk.
Unfortunately due to the lack of support services provided by the health service everyone in this country need to start looking out for each other as the government don't give a dam. they didn't give a crap their last term in office and they won't now. How many more have to die before the people will vote in politician's who do care? |

This might not be a popular view but I keep hearing people say there are no services out there. There might not be government funded service but there are many volunteers manning phone line 24/7 and places like piete house offering counselling.
I got a phone call from James hospital about two years ago to say a female friend had tried to take her life, why she rang me instead of family I'll never know. The doctor told me when I got there that she needs counselling instead of meds as it was the only thing she hadn't yet tried and for 15 years + she had been medicated without every finding out if her problem was a chemical imbalance or to do with some troubled family history. Anyway the doctor told me I would be wasting my friends time using the hospitals mental health services as it's more or less full of juniors with no real experience. He gave me the number of pieta house in naas who as luck would have it spoke to her 4 hours later face to face. We took this girl in for six months and I have no doubt pieta house is the sole reason she is still alive.
The counsellor words stuck with me when he said there is always someone there to help but for some people they just hide it so well we can never get to them. Others are lucky enough to have a friend that will ask the hard question and then let them vent or point them towards a professional. Often it's just stripping your life back to the bare bones and not taking anti depressants as a first step |

I remember hearing a statistic that showed that people who knew someone who committed suicide are WAY more likely to do it themselves. That may be a factor here. I also think the Irish culture makes it hard for men to talk about their feelings. Many don't have anyone they feel they can open up to. It's a stupid pseudo alpha male trait. |

There is a school of thought that depression is an emotion, and not down to simply a chemical imbalance - or that the chemical balance is the result of the emotions not the cause. I agree that if you fail to address issues in your life or your thinking, then no medication is going to "cure" you. |

There is some sub standard "counseling" in operation, I know first hand, I went out with one, she had more issues than half her patients,
Also received "treatment" a couple years back and some of the things my doctor said to me made me feel worse, it still resonates in my head, I recovered slowly but the system is definitely flawed, |

Sorry for your loss op ! My opinion for what its worth ... I agree with lots of comments here , waiting lists can be mental for mental health services ( I had to wait 8 mths for an appt for a 10 year old !! ) , I don't think people know enough of voluntary services etc so maybe if they were publicized more .
Also I think gp's need to be trained in mental health or stop diagnosing !! There are soooooo many different forms of mental health problems and also so many treatments . there are some people who need medication and won't function without , others need therapy , others need fresh air and good friends . so knowledge is power I feel and as a country I think we are getting better at talking but we still have a long way to go .
As for the anti epileptic meds ... They are used for various reasons . I take them for back pain but they are also prescribed for several mental health problems eg: anxiety x |

I do get a headache if I was to miss them, which is a ohysical dependency on them, but I did try reduce before and it totally made a difference, and I did it properly under doctor supervision and everything.

Male suicide rate in Ireland increased by 57 % during recession...there's a clear link between a heathy state and the populations health. Now I leave it up to everyone on here to decide wether our politicians in power care about the people or only about themselves |

I'm so sorry for your loss op. I've had several close friends die by suicide in the last few years so I know w what you're experiencing.
I agree with some of what's been said on this thread but there's some parts I don't. I agree that the mental health service is lacking particularly when it comes down to waiting lists, however the care in most services is second to none when the person has been seen. I could be wrong but I think I read something above about the people working in the services being inexperienced which I personally believe is a very unfair comment. Also it needs to be in people's minds that the mental health services in this country are severely under resourced more so than general but is this publicised? And yet the government are taking a significant sum from the mental health budget to use in another area.
I'm a strong believer in medication doing 50% and 50% is how you help yourself. Depending on the person, circumstances, psychosocial stressors and the illness itself. Several therapies are good in combination with meds, etc. There's so many options but most arent publicised and you need to search. Several of the voluntary organisations are amazing, others not so much. But as every person is unique what they find beneficial is unique. If anyone wants help with voluntary mental health organisations just mail me.
Sorry for rambling, back to the original point. There are a lot of deaths by suicide within society, a large proportion of these people have never attended the mental health service nor have they or would they be referred. In my eyes there's a strong possibility that they had already made up there mind and didn't want help or it happened on impulse. Obviously there's a significant correlation between recession and rise in suicide and I know there's recent studies and ongoing studies into this. The answer is though we're never going to know 'why' someone chooses to die by suicide and therefore finding a conclusive cause for increase in numbers is difficult. But I believe the numbers weren't accurate over the years, and even now there's several deaths that could be suicides and are ruled natural causes.

The government can't or just don't want to improve the mental health services in Ireland. The front line staff are usually pretty good but their hands are full with the amount of people that are trying to access the services. There are lots of non government organisations that are a real help to people. I suffer with depression and was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. The medication didn't work for me. Believe it or not going to the gym works for me. |

Exercise release the seratonin in the brain which is mire commonly known as the 'happy hormone' which is why it helps with the mood.
It definitely works for me along with medication.

I get the meaning of this, or how some people would feel like this. A friend of mine died many years ago by suicide, and the note that was left said just that; the family will be better off without me. The family have been forever devastated, as have other families.
However, I disagree that your quote is the best description of depression. I have lived with depression for probably forty years, I remember even as a child periods of deep, inexplicable sadness that would land on me and leave again with no advance warning either way. But I have never, ever thought about suicide. I have never felt the need to stop living. I don't think depression and suicide necessarily go hand in hand, although suicide is obviously the end result of depression for some people. |

Well to a point you are right but also very wrong. I have an immediate family member in CMH "Dundrum central mental hospital" who suffers Schizophrenia and paranoid psychosis. It's unlikely he will ever be released.
To understand the terms used you also have to take into account the admission by the doctors and psychologists that they do not have a full understanding of why the drugs work and in most cases there will be serious enough side effect, two of the most common are severe lethargy and or sexual disfunction.
This is taking directly from literature given to us from Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist Dr Paul

Although it is unknown exactly how the treatments used alter brain function tests and medical trials have proved significant progress in improving a patients quality of life while taking some side effects into account"
This family member is now big medicated with a drug called olanzapine by depot "forced injection every two weeks" with out this I witnessed him trying to smash his head open against a wall. With it he held my sisters child and can hold a very decent calm conversation to the point you might just think he had a mild learning difficulty.

Counselling should always be a first step but to be so stubborn as to say medication is a scam. Well that would be a negligent stance to have if the life of a family member was in your hands |

Antipsychotics aka tranquilizers. It's difficult to be psychotic when you're almost asleep. That's probably why he seems calm and like he has a mild learning difficulty. |

For a guy who has been in and out of St. Pats I actually found Pieta House worked for me more.
Pills worked for me but affected so much of my life and lost a lot of friendships in my life.
For me I stopped taking them and worked on me and my life rather being a zombie. Pills are help you go day to day but don't address the issues

Antipsychotics aka tranquilizers. It's difficult to be psychotic when you're almost asleep. That's probably why he seems calm and like he has a mild learning difficulty. "
Do you suggest the alternative is better, give him nothing and wait to byty him ?. I've seen him given simply tranquilizers and it's not pretty. He's beyond couselling although it is provided in abundance and no drug will ever make him anywhere near normal. That said it's a blessing that they are treating him, I'm not silly enough to think it's fixing him but it let's him live, without it he's in restraints 24/7 or dead. Easy choice. |

"There is a school of thought that depression is an emotion, and not down to simply a chemical imbalance - or that the chemical balance is the result of the emotions not the cause. I agree that if you fail to address issues in your life or your thinking, then no medication is going to "cure" you. I am not picking on u but the term chemical imbalance is a load of bullshit, if u ask a doctor if they can test for it they will say they can't because there is none. It is just a bullshit term used to fob people off because they don't know. The worst part is when they medicate for "chemical imbalance", it's like stabbing in the dark and a lot of times the cure can cause more problems than it solves. FFS when my wife was in America and she was seeing a therapist the fucker gave her medication that was originally for epileptic sufferer's. They really need to spend a bit more time studying this before they start throwing pills at the problem.
^^^ this
There is no evidence any where that it's due to a chemical imbalance, they don't even know what a 'normal' chemical balance is!
It's just a big money maker for pharma.
O'Connell
" Antipsychotics behave in a similar way to anti depressants and work by altering the effect of certain chemicals in the brain, called dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline and acetylcholine. These chemicals have the effect of changing your behaviour, mood and emotions. Dopamine is the main chemical that these medicines have an effect on.

When did I say giving him nothing was the alternative?
I was making a point about psychotropic drugs and chemical imbalances in the brain and that antipsychotic drugs are just tranquilizers. |

"The government can't or just don't want to improve the mental health services in Ireland.
"
They tried loads of different stuff with me. None of it really worked. I was always up and down and thinking if hurting myself again until I started my gym work. |

"For a guy who has been in and out of St. Pats I actually found Pieta House worked for me more.
Pills worked for me but affected so much of my life and lost a lot of friendships in my life.
For me I stopped taking them and worked on me and my life rather being a zombie. Pills are help you go day to day but don't address the issues
Pieta House are amazing "
I hope this post helps others it should. |
