So day 1.
Hundreds of happy and nervous faces signed on in the phoenix park before rolling out towards Virginia in Cavan. Young and old shoulder to shoulder trying to stop the 800 deaths a year by talking about the issue. The sun even made an appearance for a while..
So we wound our way slowly towards Navan a long line of orange, people clapping and cheering as we passed. It's amazing how many people come up to support the cycle. Over lunch we heard people talk about their lives and struggles. These are ordinary people like you and me living their life as best they can. Some have suffered terribly. Some are so inspiring you feel totally humbled by them. But all normal people
So eventually we hit our destination. It's after 6pm. I'm over 5 hrs in the saddle and 3 counties and 80 odd km from home.
I said my goodbyes to those I had met today and turned for home on my own. This is where my real challenge begins. Gone are the others. It's just me and the road ahead now.
I know it's going to get dark at 9 so I have to put the head down and raise my game or I will be out all night
So it's think about the next 10km and only that. The trick is to not over think what's ahead.
I roll past 100km then 10 more then 10 more each 10 a step closer to home. The only noise is the wind in my face and the hum of tyres on the road and the cars passing me.
My head full of random thoughts. My ass giving out to me. I can feel the beating of my heart in my chest as I push on as hard as I dare.
The first hour passes then the next. Am getting closer but the body is now less happy about the situation. The smell of the take aways in the towns as I pass bye all pushing me on.
And just after 9 I roll in home. 8 hours. 188km behind me. Tired but happy inside my own head.
Tomorrow is another day... |

Great stuff. Well done to you & all involved. Was out marshalling on Easter Sunday for a sponsored cycle for mental health & suicide awareness. Never say no to the organisers when approach & ask for help with this. |
