It never ceases to amaze me that there is so much bad spelling on profiles and messages.

How hard can it be !

I'd better check my own profile for any mistakes now

I know a lot of the time I miss spell things on my profile and in messages, hell I probably miss spelled something here

Unfortunately for myself I am dyslexic and I don't mind it, can be a bit hurtful people messaging back making fun of the fact I have it

Just keep an open mind

Is the title of this thread untie or unite?!

At the end of the day everyone makes spelling mistakes, we're not all perfect. Nobody can say that they have never made a spelling mistake in their lives or auto correct hasn't changed what they were meant to say. Everyone has their own reasons for these mistakes whether it be through no fault of their own or just clumsiness. Personally I have no issue with it as I'm always making spelling mistakes. Unless they've complete text speak I don't see an issue.

Get with the programme leitrim_guy, the title is supposed to be spelt incorrectly.

Hmmm. A lesser spotted grammar nazi. I to have to deal with dyslexia and let me tell you that you have no idea how difficult it can make life if you try to complete third level education.

Your observations while correct in a way are also rather snobbish and having had this conversation with many others who deem themselves intellectual and have been blessed with a good education, many don't have the same chance in life but are far less judging.

There is a huge difference between lazy grammar and poor grammar. I from time to time suffer from both but fooked if I'll be judged on it.

Isn't it worse to lie about being athletic in a profile or being rude in your profile text.

Sometimes it's best to think before you type, with best but ill thought out intentions you might just offend people more than you think *didn't use spellchecker *

Everyone makes spelling mistakes now and then we're human and auto correct can be a sneaky little bitch too and change words to make you look silly. In an ideal world we would all proof read our messages but who has the time for that unless it's an important document?

Poor spelling isn't the end of the world at all, purposefully using text speak on the other hand now that's infuriating!

It does seem as if this has touched a nerve of two with some people on here. I'll say again, it is just an observation.

Sorry but when you make a point of any kind you should at least have the conviction to stand by it. The funny thing about it is the to you it's nothing serious so you can be rather flippant about it.

It's no different than someone calling a tv a hairy panty wearer and thinking it's okay just because said it's not something that affects them.

Lots of reasons. Dyslexia being one imore familiar with

Other reasons. ...typing bring bad at it or in my case the bloody phone changing the spelling or word completely.

Leave the bad spellers alone

As long as you get the gist what's the harm

I've made an observation and I'm sticking by it because it's a fact.

Also I don't recall me calling anyone anything, thus not sure what you are getting at.

Maybe I just think that if someone spelt something wrong and they realised knew it they might go back and correct it.

Fair point. So I'm not going to start a war of words but you should check your profile in that case. You're spelling isn't to bad but there are grammar errors. On that note I shall bow out.

ive struggled with dyslexia my whole life and was ridiculed by teachers over it my handwriting is like that of a 5year old. but iv made great advances with spelling grammar and vocabulary I still occasionally misspell words. I know a lot of people are like me but there are many people who claim to be dyslexic but are not. the amount who will answer" oh when where you tested?" with "oh I wasn't I just can't spell" is huge nearly every second person 50% of the population can't be dyslexic. yes it hurts when people try to make fun or make light of a disability. but what is worse is people pretending to have a disability to cover up a lack of education.

As we get older and become adults, we have a choice to expand and improve our own abilities and education. Some choose not too. So while I agree that when children, it can't be helped. Adults choose who they want to be and how they want to live their lives. Some choose to not bother, some choose to better themselves and improve their skills and abilities on a continuing basis.

no definitely not but to use a disability that genuinely affects peoples lives as an excuse is wrong most people I know that are dyslexic have used many different coping techniques to over come or circumvent it in ways to appear "normal" its those that use dyslexia as some sort of defence (when they aren't) only cheapens mine and everyone else's struggle with this disability.

If this is your reasoning perhaps you should expand your own education on the subject...

Thousands of people by virtue of their status, disabilities, age, gender ect are not capable of improving their skills..

Education whilst being somewhat easier to access than previously is still in its infancy...

Completely disagree. Where there is a will, there is a way. The strength of the human will is underestimated. If you want something badly enough, you will find a way. In this instance, disabilities aside, it is achievable.

Couldn't agree more. Worse than a poor speller is a liar claiming dyslexia or a dyslexic person looking for pity or using it as a crutch. It's a thing that can be overcome with a bit of effort.

Thankfully for me a few years ago the V.E.C we're running course for people like myself that we're poor spellers, I still find myself having to think of things like "their house and not there house" and using a b and not a d in spelling. Things like hopping and hoping still gets me.

Completely disagree. Where there is a will, there is a way. The strength of the human will is underestimated. If you want something badly enough, you will find a way. In this instance, disabilities aside, it is achievable.

Travelling Community, Emmigrants on poor income, Women on low income raising children alone unable to attend classes..

Illiterate elderly , unable to access further education.

Lots more if you are interested...

You're in the "I can't" camp. I'm in the "I can" camp. It's just my philosophy. "

My camp?

The camp of the ability to acceot that there are people less fortunate than myself with respect of education.

Goodluck with your philosophy, am sure it will carry you well if you meet those less fortunate than your goodself

More important to me is the message rather than the spelling. It's nice to see good spelling and punctuation but good spelling doesn't make a ridiculous argument sensible, nor does poor spelling do the opposite.

So without knowing my personal circumstances or for that matter anyone else's here, am I in the "I can't" camp or the "I can" camp". You seem terribly well informed on camps.

You're not really in any camp, you just have less to do than others. Yes some are lazy but others choose to take up courses which will increase their pay packet and studying to have perfect English isn't going to do that in most cases. If I was to guess at which camp you were in it would be "If I was wrong I sure as hell wouldn't admit it" camp. It's a pretty well populated camp so you won't feel lonely that's for sure.

"So the person that started this has a problem with us dyslexic folk yet he is a man dressing in woman's clothing... I'm sure you for one gets abused about that so for you or yous to judge someone because of their spelling is very classy..

"

Show me where, in any of my posts that I have mentioned or singled out any group of people. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I've made an observation. From some comments on this thread you would think that every spelling mistake made every spelling mistake made was by someone who is dyslexic, I think not.

Get on with life a bit more, I am and stop getting your knickers in a twist, I'm not.

Sandra and Spanish. From your comments it would seem that you believe that circumstance would dictate the level of an adults education and that there is no getting around it. That's what I'm getting from you both. My view is simple. We are in a first world country. We are chatting on an online forum. It's safe to say that the circumstances of people on here is fairly good generally. We have enough money and access to be on here. Now given this and the fact we are talking about fabbers. I believe that, disability aside, people with a lower than average ability of the written form of English language, do have the opportunity to improve. They however choose not to or do not deem it necessary for themselves. In any case, disability aside, many people around the world, less fortunate than ourselves, choose to better themselves and are successful in doing so. Why? Probably because they want to and believe in themselves. They are the doers in this world. They don't believe in settling for the life they have been born into. They believe that anything is possible. If you want something enough, you find a way. You do anything to achieve it. No matter where you are or what your circumstances are. You never give up. Step by step you move forward. So in life I believe "I can". I believe anything is possible for everyone. You just need to put the work in and bust your gut until you achieve it.
