When RTE says it, it must be true, as we didn't know it yet. It's a government spin to prepare people for the coming legislated minimum alcohol price per item. Will it stop people from drinking? ...No, but it pays their pension...

Last I heard the minimum pricing was thrown out in a EU court unless the ruling was overturned? Was it?

Now am lookin at story of Amy Winehouse. Brilliantly talented woman but so sad a story. Confirms the message though that alcohol is bad for you.

Dublin/westmeath/kildare

Scottish minimum pricing was denied & it was a lot less then planned Irish version. It didn't succeed as there is easier way then minimum price already in effect its called tax hence it was suggested to increase tax again.

Putting it into effect isn't going to change way Irish drink & per person versus drink consumed we aren't highest any more. Its culture that needs changing, need somewhere other than pub to meet in evening/ night. Cafes are open same length as pubs in Germany & they are packed.

It won't hinder the government to increase the tax instead. The sad thing is, it's neither aimed nor designed to make people drink less, but to extort more money out of the people.

Tobacco and cigarettes are ridiculously expensive in Ireland, do less people smoke? I doubt it, but the black market is thriving.

Increasing tax hurts the less well off as this section of our community will use more of what disposable income they have on less of what they desire education is the key

Amy Winehouse had an addiction, I have two close family members who are alcoholics..

Regardless of the cost involved, monetary or health they will find a way to drink..

We need to engage our children at a very young age, educate them that alcohol can be enjoyed without binging out..

We tolerate not educate here in Ireland, back slapping those who drink themselves stupid..

Excessive drinking destroys lives, and is responsible for not only the drinkers downfall but their childrens!

Actually less do smoke due to cost but the tax intake is not affected due to the higher tax. I cant remember the economic name for this off the top of my head. I would agree with the thriving black market but in many cases these tobacco products aren't exactly pure if that makes sense or even cheap.

I totally agree with education of the effects of excessive drinking. Myself and kitty have alcoholics in our family on both sides and its a horrible thing to see. Neither kitty or myself are big drinkers but at the same time have no issues with people enjoying drinking.

My own father chose not to drink as his father returned from the war a heavy drinker.

Dad tried his best to educate us all re the devastation that excessive drinking can cause.

Like yourselves, I enjoy a drink, but know my limits..

I get so angry at the attitude of some people though, oh sure he/ she are only drinkers god love them

Tell that to their kids sitting at home, waiting for their dinner, the partner dreading the next slap or the family devastated by d*unk drivers..

Don't forget the government hiking taxes on one side and investing in shares in these same companies to make a little pin money.
