On a basic level, it'd depend on the repair shop but the same can be said of any service. Ask around and see if people have had bad experiences.

However it isn't something too unusual and most shops should be able to do it with no adverse consequences.

Dublin

it's been a while since i've had an iphone, so i dont know if things have changed, so here goes.

In order to unlock an iphone it must first be jailbroken. that means hacking the software. but to do that a hack must exist for the version of software thats on your phone. if there isnt a hack yet, you must wait.

if it's hackable then happy days, these shops should be able to do it. trouble is, if you update the software afterwards the hack (and the unlock ) is removed, putting you back at square one.

The best way to unlock an iphone is the official way. you call your service provider and ask them to unlock it. if they agree to do so you give them the phones IMEI number. they in turn give the IMEI number to apple. once apple place the number in the unlock database then you will be notified (usually by text) that your phone is ready to be unlocked. you then hook up your phone to itunes and itunes checks the apple database, sees that your IMEI is on the list and unlocks the phone, for good.

now, this info might be old, so please correct me if i'm wrong!

You need what's called an IMEI unlock which is a factory unlock. The fixit shops can't do it without "chipping" your phone which means opening up your iPhone and adding a chip.

Don't go to them! I can't stress this enough!! It will void your warranty for starters.

Go onto ebay and search "IMEI unlock Vodafone Ireland iPhone 6". Just change the word Vodafone to whatever network your phone is locked to.

I used this service and my phone was unlocked within two days. It's unlocked at the apple factory on Apple's database. It will cost around €20 which is dirt cheap.

Once it is unlocked, you just pop in your sim from your preferred network and connect your phone to iTunes and that's your phone unlocked.

All you need to supply is your IMEI number which is found on the back of the box and on the back of the phone.

What John said would have been spot on two years ago. But IMEI unlocks via jailbreaking are no longer available as Apple were very quick to patch that hole. I jailbreak all of my Apple devices and if there was a way to unlock with a jailbreak then I's have done it myself.

Your only safe bet is to go onto ebay and do what I said above.

Just ring the network provider that it's locked to...

Depending whether your locked into a contract or not they will provide it to you
