When I was younger I loved the surprise of xmas gift/s!!!
So, my sister wants her son to get the presents he wants from people rather than the surprise, surprises are nicer when you're older she says....... in other words my sister tells me what present to get for him not just for xmas, this year she told him to choose a toy for me to get for him.......
There's a big chance he may not like the gift and then he..... (who is 6 years old I might add!!)...... cry's then because he didn't like it or the gift broke or he couldn't figure out how it worked etc etc......
....... For me I loved the surprise when I was a kid more so than now I'm older.......
So, tell me what did you like about surprise gifts at xmas time or birthday? did you prefer it a surprise when you were a child or a surprise now you're a number of years older......?? also, what do you think of people telling you what presents to get for their children or do you prefer to buy a gift for a child and hope for the best he/she will like it......
.......Opinions please sexy people, it can be funny as you want lol!!! |

So what happens when he chooses something that costs €300+? Or something that's completely unsuitable for a 6 year old?
I agree, the surprise is the best part, there's something a bit flat about opening a present when you already know what it is. |

Methinks OP's sister is going to have a child just as demanding as she is!! |

Would love to do that believe me...... She'll just remind me that any present I have given him before is crap except the ones she told me to get..... "
That's easily solved by not getting him any... |

Can't you find a little time alone with the little guy and ask him yourself Rose? Daytrip? |

Surprises when you are a kid can be magical, and when you're older surprises can still be great.... Once you really know the individual who's to receive the present, which of course you do.
For young children the bigger the box the better the present what ever it is and who small the present is in side it.

She gets the catalogue out and tells me to choose out of the 3/4 gifts..... this year she got her son to pick a toy for me to get for him..... I hate that.... it wrecks my head..... |

Refuse to play along then. Observe your nephew and his interests, shouldn't be too difficult to pick something that will appeal to him. A |

I can kind of see where your sister is coming from rose , just maybe she is saying it in the wrong way I know when my kids were younger I'd always get the phone call just before birthdays & Christmas and at times I would have said maybe just get clothes as he/she has enough toys, now when the calls come I would he is into star wars she is into music etc and let the person decide from there !
I personally like surprises |

I bet there's noting as bad a present that wont be appreciated
I think bringing your Nephew out somewhere would be a much better pressie
You can't put a price on lovely memories
I reckon your sister just doesn't want you wasting your money on something that will just sit unused

There's always something a kid has an interest in that's not mainstream & you never know where feeding that interest is going to go. I have a nephew who, along with his "he wants the whole set of Power Rangers so you could get him the green set" one year also got a crystal radio kit from us that he had to build himself to make it work. He's now finishing his last year in college doing a degree in Electrical engineering... |

But my sister doesn't even do that, she doesn't wait for the phonecalls to come in....... she's telling people well in advance...... we actually argue when I tell her I want to decide myself what to get him because it will have come from me...... my sister may as well get the gift, wrap it up and give to me to give to him..... Whatever gift you buy is between yourself and your nephew \niece. My parents used to phone before our sons birthday or Christmas to ask what they were a loud to buy I've always said that's between yourselves and your grandchild its your money spend it how you wish. My brother will phone them and give a long list off what they are not allowed to buy. 2 years ago he phoned us and told us they didn't want the Christmas gift it was too big and to return it and get something smaller I can honestly say I've never been so hurt. The poor child had no say if they wanted it or not it was opened and put in the hall to be returned. |

Eventualy the extended family got together one year and simply refused to buy into her ridiculous demands.

I think everybody here have given good advice. One thing I would consider though and that is... Is there certain kinds of toys your sister just does not want him to have. i.e. anything to do with war or violence? Now that's a parenting issue, and id respect that. Otherwise, with that in mind get him something you think he would like.. And if he really likes it then he will always remember it was from you... |

My child is as always planning for xmas in three years with a few well I might like this for xmas hints. We try to get what she wants within reason she is 8 (and would like a full set of make up) some things santa might bring other he most definately will not. You buy what you are comfortable with not what you are being told to |

I can see her point though, while I agree that when I was small surprises were the best, but with kids these days they get so much (probably a bit too much) as we all know they will have one or two favourites and the rest will only be played with for a few days, so getting him something he wants might eliminate that?
Or you could do what another poster said and do an activity rather than getting him a gift? |

I remember when my now 16 year old was young I hated all his aunts and uncles would arrive with Christmas presents ....he got so much stuff from them that dare I say the sheer volume of which would out shadow his Santa presents...one time I remember the poor little boy starting to sob crying surrounded by toys ..poor boy was crying over the delimema of what to play with first lol...admittedly he is a great kid though |

It was definitely the surprise. So ya we wrote santa letters but were we good enough to get what we asked for?? The quiet sneak passed my parents room at 4am Christmas morning..... Peeping round the corner to see if santa has been... Heart beating.... And the jump it does then when you see that yes!!! I was a good lad!!! I got what I asked for!!!!
And that's what I want to see in my own kids now! Personally I don't care what people get them as long as they put some effort and thought into it! They would be as happy with a 2 euro hat with a funny face on as they would be with a xbox!! |

I wouldn't agree with ur sister telling u what to get ur nephew.

Unfortunately, he has pointed out the gift he wants out of the 3 toys my sister told him to choose from so I have to go & get the one he chose but next year it'll be different..... I will bring him out shopping & get him to pick something or treat him another way by bringing him out somewhere of which he'll enjoy!!! |

Half the fun of giving a present to someone else's child is knowing that it will annoy the shit out of the parents. My best yet are fingerprints for a four year old and a trumpet for them a year earlier. |

Actually my sister hates getting vouchers, so she won't want it for her son even more so, she prefers the effort being made in buying a gift.... |

Damn auto correct. Should have been fingerpaints. Sorry about that.
On a more serious note. I often give books and like to "develop" the child's interest in different authors and subjects. My Sister knows better than to try and define what I'll buy BUT it does take more effort on my part. |

Make sure its a big one. Got my God Daughter one a number of years ago. For an equivalent size they tend to be simpler than the 2D ones due to the way they are constructed.
