Just thought we would share a situation we had on Saturday night in a Dublin city centre hotel ( not sure if we should name it on here ) .. We were in Dublin on Saturday night to meet two girls .. We checked into the hotel and arranged to meet the girls in the hotel bar. On having some food in the early evening in the bar we decided we didn't like it and text the girls to meet them in a bar next door to the hotel. We met and had a great night ! Bar was buzzing with the rugby being on but we still managed to find a quiet corner where we could chat freely. We decided to head back to the hotel bar at 12.45 for a drink before heading upstairs only to be stooped at the door of the hotel by why can only be described as the most ignorant guy imaginable with a clipboard looking for our room number. We gave him the number and started to go inside. He then wanted a room number for the two girls that were with us ! We explained that they were friends and having a drink in the bar with us. Apparently they had to be residents to have a drink after 12.30 even though they were accompanied by residents ! If we had arrived at 12.30 .. 15 mins earlier .. All four of us could have stayed in the bar all night !! We spoke with the guy behind the desk ( who forgot to bring his personality to work ) and he informed us in no certain terms that the only way the two girls could gain entry was to book a room at a cost of €220 ! Eventually that's what we did .. They wouldn't even let the girls stand inside the hotel while we spoke to the staff !! We have stayed in a lot of hotels , particularly in Dublin and never encountered an hotel policy like this one !! Anyone else have a similar experience ? |

I had a similar situation with a hotel in Charleville in cork(shouldn't be hard to figure out what hotel seeing as there's only 1)only I was in the position of the 2 girls in my situation. Sounds like the employee who you encountered transfered from Charleville also! |

Spot on, also stops stags and hens from booking a room for 2 and then 8 people stay there , most hotels do it, |

Pretty much standard for most hotels in large city areas (esp Cardiff and Birmingham).
Guests of residents are allowed back until a certain time (usually quiet time, when residents are likely to be sleeping), which then it's residents only, and that includes the bar areas.
It's also to stop people from packing out hotel rooms with "others" when a room is only for 2 people - eg stag/hen parties etc - so it's in line with fire/safety regs etc. |

These are all fair points - establishments have the right to refuse admission and are also subject to health and safety regulations as well as having responsibilities to other guests. If you were sleeping with your kids in a hotel room or on business with a 7 am start would you be happy with 10 people partying next door at 3am?

Thanks for the replies guys .. We understand why some hotels would employ this policy ! It's just our first time encountering it ! The way it was dealt with so poorly by a guy with a clip board and then by the guy at the desk was nearly more of an issue ! Obviously not all staff can be as professional as they probably should be , especially on a Saturday night when they are working, but for a 4 star central Dublin hotel , we just felt it was handled very poorly .. |

Its very common..Its happened to me in dublin wit a girl few years bak. Happened n limerick twice in different hotels altho one security guy n limerick gave into sweet girls charms.
So ya security n hotels just doing there jobs. Cant blame them dats the way it is. |

They probably get so much hassle and grief from piss heads..
then again, it's not like they are paid more than the min wage to make a job like that worth being happy about.
There are many customer service positions created nowadays, but many of those working have very little customer service skills - it's just a job that pays the bills, but thats the 24 hours 7 days a week lifestyle we are in thesedays. |

I know someone that does the doors at a hotel and he gives out each week about arrogant people that he meets at the door. He does say sometimes after talking to so many rude people he endes up blowing off steam at someone who didnt deserve it. So maybe before you got to that person he had to deal with so much shit that he ended up bein a dick head by the time ye got to him. |

I recently was in a hotel in Dublin and once I arrived the bus that brings you to hotel from airport. I realised I left my phone on the bus. To try and get the members of staff to understand and be some what compassionate over it was a nightmare.
She was bloody rude while I was having a hissy fit. |

Ireland still has a lot do when it comes to customer care ! W travel quite a bit and find Ireland's standard pretty low compared to other European cities ! That's our own personal experience of course ! |

This isn't anything new
Well before my fab career, myself and a friend met up with 6 English girls of which they had 3 rooms booked in a hotel in Galway in the square
When we got to main door - no what we said or pleaded we weren't getting in
The girls even offered cash
Was such a kick in the balls walking away from the hospital - hate thinking back to that night  |

It does happen in alot of hotels but I think since the down turn alot are only happy to let people into the bar after hours.i have worked as security in a few hotels and they did not mind who came in with people booked in after all once you pay for a room it's yours to do what you want as long as there is no damage done. It's like renting a house or apt it's yours you have paid for it. |

This is normal practice its part of the licensing laws only hotel guests may be served after "closing time" thats the way its always been both here and in the uk . As for hotel security checking room keys before you head for bedroom area that's pretty normal in city center hotels as well . I am sure if your hotel room had been burgled while you where in Dublin you would also be posting here today as well . Paid good money, room burgled ,trip ruined its a disgrace they don't have decent security or something along those lines . |

Actually we wouldn't have being posting anything if we were robbed because it's not relevant .. That would have nothing to do with 4 fab friends spending a night in an hotel ..

Always use the 2 keys
Have the social drink but head up to the room early enough. If it's a small party no harm bringing a little of ur choice 
At least be in the bar of the hotel then head up in dribs and drabs not to draw attention to yourselves
And last point if ya get it the room enjoy ur night I do |

 fire safety is a huge factor behind it yes.
I encountered this practice as common place in Liverpool and other English cities even as far back as 1999.
However I have seen the same hotels relax those rules, doorman in good form etc lol. |

Have encountered similar situations in various hotels around the country.... Mainly where there are known night time revelry going on in the area. Not only checking names but how many to the room. In some cases they even check names and rooms when you get drinks at the bar.... In other words get your act together before hand. Not being d*unk and being polite is known to work, but not always.... |

We had a similar problem in a hotel in limerick except there was a guy at the lift with a clip board instead of the door, luckily enough we were staying in a different hotel from the couple we had met and we let in without hesitation and went on to have a great night  |

Just a thought. I presume with two room keys two can head in with one key and another two head in half an hour later with the second. Unless the hotel is empty how does the guy with the clip board know if the first two left again? |

Standard practice in most hotels worldwide.
Came across it in America over 10 yrs ago, long before my swinging days.
Met an Irish friend (an ex) who was visiting same city i was in for the summer. Met had few beers etc. went to go back to her hotel. With the Night porter/security guys,Was a case of your names not down your not coming in mate.
Couldnt really argue with him & didnt either. Just doing his job. |
