As for the Coca Cola bike Kamikazes. The city is survival of the fittest.

They are very vulnerable and drivers need to be aware. Yes they can be a pain but remember, you are driving a ton or more of metal, you won't feel so clever when they are under your wheels.

The Dead Marshes

"How many agree that cycyclists are now a scurge!they almost look for rows on the road!"

It's 'cyclist' and 'scourge'. I'm surprised not to see 'lol' at the end there, though.

A former friend of mine killed one in London a few years ago, through careless driving and not giving space. He did time, lost his job and his home. And most of his friends too.

Closed coffin for my former friend's victim, a 25 year old who was cycling her prized vintage bike to work, like she did every morning. Bumped her headfirst into an oncoming car as she was trying to turn right. He was late for a meeting and texting.

Who's the scourge now?

People can be ignorant on bikes or in cars. Painting everyone with the same brush is silly. Many people cycle and drive are they 1/2 scourge.

I cycle & I have to watch myself, some drivers when overtaking don't leave much space for the cyclist to breathe and pull in too close to the cyclist, close on being tipped, some end up being tipped......

I've been in and left two cycling clubs over the last five years due to member dismounting bikes and abusing motorists when said cyclists were way way in the wrong. The first time was a dusk ride coming into naas and half the guys had no high vis or lights. This is normally balanced by those guys staying on the inside. So on a bend one of the almost invisible guys nearly gets milled and a female driver rightly goes nuts and beeps.

She had three kids in the car and when we caught up with her at the lights he got off his bike, opened the door of her car and threatened her. Now maybe 75% of the guys thought this was hilarious, the rest of us left the club that night as this was the culture of that club and still is in many I have rode with. Outnumbering motorists knowing no one will stop a car and take on 20 guys.

Like I said this is the culture in almost all clubs and it will not change unless the guards get involved. Commuting cyclists, well you shouldn't label all as being dangerous because of the actions of a few tools. I still think the biggest problem is lack of education. I remember our school brought us to a safety course back around 1989 to the spa well who ran a cycle/driver awareness course for kids. I know of nowhere else that does this now

Agree with the above. You should see the damage a cyclist can do to a car as it drives over him. Feck all. If they behave like an idiot it's best to over take them when it's safe and leave said idiot in your rear veiw mirror.

Sorry Sandra..but this is complete total and utter bullshit ...the instance you describe makes that individual cyclist an aggressive bully and makes anyone with him who didn't take him to task week willed. It is def NOT the culture of 'almost all' cycling clubs and I'm suprised after reading your posts for a while that you came out with such a,sweeping and heinously foul generalisation

There will always be instances where cyclists are in the wrong, but the difference is when a motorist gets it wrong the consequences are tragic..

Best way to think of it..pick up your ten year old in high jinks and he slips and you drop him..bruises bumps...

Back up your bike there big fella. I gave my experience and if yours is any different then you have been far luckier than I have in the club's you have been in. I'm in the position of cycling with two other guys now because there is no club within 25 miles of us that this isn't the culture. We did take this guy to task as it wasn't the first time it had happened and this incident caused a serious fracture in the club and selection of a new but no better chairperson.

I'm not terribly bothered what you think of my previous posts and I'd like to think I would be a bit more constructive than calling any one a bullshitter. Are you accusing me of making this up ?

I have noticed that when you come across a wank of cyclists (I hope the name wank catches on for a group of cyclists ) they seem to share a single brain cell and are incapable of independent thought moving as though connected to a hive.

I just wish that cyclists would realise that while it may be legal to cycle two abreast on narrow winding roads, it's not safe.

Why is it not safe for two cyclists to cycle side by side? Because morons in cars are too busy reading their smartphones to look at the road?

Use of the road is the same as everything else. 90 % of users are fine and the rest should not be let loose. That goes for cyclists as well as pedestrians as well as drivers.

Except for Toyota drivers. Any person driving a Toyota has proven by their car choice they aren't fit to be let out in public. ....

I would have thought it is obvious why cyling two abreast on a winding road barely 10 feet wide might not be advisable

Country lanes were mentioned in the suggestion, I guess as a lot of country lanes are 80kmh speed limit, have no shoulder & most cyclists travel a lot slower it only makes sense to ride in single file to avoid leaving yourself at risk of being hit by a vehicle.

Your manners dictate what you call it. You can of course disagree like a grown up and use appropriate language or maybe you are more likely to be one of the larger proportion of those who loses the rag while trying to make a point. Either way you're more than welcome to disagree but you've given little or no explanation why I might be wrong apart from an agro tone

When did it become such a big deal to slow behind a cyclist or group before overtaking? Many countries have made it law NOT to overtake cyclists at speed and it is 100% enforced. No motorist should be passing cyclists at speed on a road without hard shoulder. FULL STOP!

Taking a life recklessly is no laughing matter. I've been unfortunate to witness a pal struck and killed instantly by a motorist and I can tell you that driver was numb knowing the reckless disregard they had demonstrated. It was no laughing matter for anyone present and I imagine life changing for that driver dealing with the guilt.

from what ive seen when i used to commute into town cyclists rarely stop for traffic lights or obey any of the rules of the road. as for cycling clubs they can be a danger to themselves when they cycle 2 and 3 abreast on a road ive seen them on dual carriageways taking up a lane when the hard shoulder would be safer for them. as soon as the guards realise what a money making scheme that fining cyclist for breaking the rules the better it might make them behave a bit better

More crap. Cyclists rarely observe the rules of the road? So what 60 or 70 % break them all the time. If that's how observant you are you need a retest my friend.

The hard shoulder is safer? Really? Have you driven on one recently? If you did you would lose your teeth from the surface. Try that on a modern road bike and see how it feels.

The hard shoulder is for stopping on temporarily. It is not for driving or riding on.

Maybe if you knew the rules of the road you might better work out who breaks them. .

Your correct on the over taking and cyclists have every right to use the road, but the rules of the road apply to all and cyclists are breaking them at will, lights and junctions. also cycling three and four deep and chatting away, that makes over taking almost impossible, this just angers motorists and will lead to bad behaviour and an accident.

It is the safest way actually. Otherwise they can be squeezed out if the road narrows or two cars are meeting if in single file.

Of course you should adjust your speed on these roads, livestock, tractors or cyclists can be just around the bend

Believe it or not laid there's legislation being passed to fine cyclists for breaking the roads of the road. They will be subject to the same fines motorists are.

Cyclists piss me off but only the ones that don't obey the rules of the road, the same way motorists who don't obey them piss me off. My point is there are good and bad cyclists just as there are good and bad motorists.

No but I can prosecute you for dangerous driving if you drive in an unsafe manner...not expecting the unexpected, not able to stop in a reasonable distance due to excessive speed.

That's the law

Just as cyclists also have the responsibility to consider the conditions and take appropriate measures to reduce risk to themselves and others.

I agree, ignorance does abound in this thread.

This subject can be argued forever but unfortunately cyclists will always come off second best no matter what rights they feel they have. A couple of years ago I saw guy on car in front of me go around a bend and collide with outside cyclist of three riding side by side. The cyclist was seriously injured. It could have been me hit them just as easy. There was no way to see them with the bend.

Then either the cyclist was on the wrong side of the road or the car was?
