What would you call 'a social drinker'.... a couple of alcoholic drinks in social company or a couple of bottles of wine/5 pints plus..... I do believe in a little dutch courage but is there a limit??? |

If you have to have a drink on a regular basis and it becomes habitual then it's no longer social
If you go out with mates don't know when to stop and get twisted it's still social but you don't have the self control to stop when you reach your limit.
The drinking culture in Ireland is crazy and complex |

"Drinking in the company of others
If you are sitting in a dark room skilling a bottle of Gin with no human contact for days - problem "
Really?? I thought a social drinker only had a couple of drinks when out in company. Not a skinful. |

I live to be alert at all times

We would of always thought it was someone who just drank socially ie not at home boozing by yourself kinda thing. We only drink when were out. Wouldn't be often and rarely get d*unk on purpose. |

It's someone who drinks socially but only a couple of drinks. A lot of people seem to think that binge drinking is "social" - it's not - in fact it's pretty damn antisocial. Unfortunately binge drinking is the cultural norm in Ireland, which is probably why many people can't tell the difference. |

Then I should have been more specific. Going out seven nights a week would not, in my opinion, be social. Social to me, is an occasional night out and having a couple of drinks. A couple every night would be a regular drinker, in my book at least. |

Plays golf on a Sat and beer after and spends a good portion of Sunday d*unk.
He classes himself as a social drinker because he is not drinking alone. |

So I'm heading to a wedding today.. If by 12am tonight I'm shit faced d*unk, does that make me an alcoholic? Even though it's probably about 2 months since I last had a drink??? Ah no. An alcoholic is when drink interfers with you being able to live a normal life and being able to get up and work and have a family. Alcoholics are totally dependant on drink. There is such a think as a functioning alcoholic aswel where they are able to hide it.
So just because I get d*unk on occasion does not make me an alcoholic. |

Just a binge drinker (joke) No one is talking about anyone being an alcoholic or not, the question is about social drinking. Hope you have a great day at the wedding |

No, what you describe is binge drinking. Being an alcoholic is an addiction, but binge drinking is not healthy either. |

I'm not sure but I think binge drinking is more Tha 3 units at one sitting....technically..now u have to consider that's only 3 half pints, 3 English measures (1/6th gill) spirits..or 3 small glasses wines..not ur modern john Rocha glass!!!..
...so essentially its hard not to binge drink by definition....but..personally.....drink affects my swing..lol...so I don't..
.
.
.whats with all the golf references today.. |

Countries all have different guides as to what qualifies as "binge drinking" which is worded so as to make it sound universally bad. UK says 2x daily limit is bingeing(8 units for men, 6 for women), US says 5 standard drinks in a 2 hour sitting for men, 4 for women. I think whatever brings attention to the problems of drinking is good but that drops me in the bingeing camp. |

Agree...but I think the cofusing messages about what constitutes bingeing allows people to remain in denial..
..personally..i love a good night out with friends..and often regret that 'last' pint...but in relation to the thread....op...if they are drinking heavy...leave...let them deal with the empty seat in front of them!!! |

I'm not a heavy drinker and hate d*unk people. I chose social drinker Because I have a couple of pints every couple of months.
If someone considers themselves a social drinker because they only get rat faced when they're out, but they go out every Thursday, Friday and Saturday then no thanks. To me, that's a problem.
Drink and getting d*unk is seen as a bravado thing in our culture, even on here, and personally I think it's sad and disgusting that that's the norm in our society |
