"A gay friend of mine was very emotional yesterday his words
at last we can be excepted....
the tears he had in his eyes hoping for the yes vote meant so much to him.."
Had the same thing happen with a friend and a gay cousin and it makes me soo proud too feel that they can finally feel equal, whether or not the whole vote thing goes out the window, but the fact they now truly feel accept is very very special |

I'm watching the live results here and have to admit getting quite emotional, I'm so happy for anyone who ever felt like a second class citizen to be vindicated and finally see that this country for one accepts you for who you are and who you were born to be
I have two gay cousins who struggled with their sexuality growing up, both are in long term committed relationships and plan to marry when this bill is passed
I'm so proud of Ireland for taking the stance and doing the right thing. Love is hard enough to find so why stop two people who love each other marrying regardless of their sex
This is a wonderful day |

"I'd say catholic church is in panic today..."
Civil marriage should have been a concern of the catholic church...equality for all. The Church in Ireland was too self absorbed in an outdated doctrine that even Pope Francis doesn't follow. |

"sad day.
If the result had been a majority of no youd still have said it was a sad day ya fence sitter! "
Lol, I think it was a real chance for us to give the constitution a proper overhaul for more equality. That will never happen now.

Maybe the laws in this respect will need attention when certain cases come before the courts ?I abstained from voting on this occasion,it doesn't affect me at all,I see it as a push too far and also view it as a Government on the back foot trying to glean votes in the next general election to try to make up for bad economic choices of the past and negotiations of the present,it's a smokescreen.

Trying to glean votes is a poor argument. The gay population of the country is estimated to be between 2.5% and 3% at most, and they don't all have votes. If you were trying to cynically buy votes, the gay community wouldn't be your first port of call. |

Turnout: 1,949,725
Invalid votes: 13,818
Valid votes: 1,935,907
Yes: 1,201,607
No: 734,300
Majority in favour of the proposal: 467,307
My argument still holds. |

The gleaning of votes,a yes vote of 1.2+ million does not tally with the 3% gay community so my reading of it would be that it is a populist return, bolstered by those affected by the issue. |

Right, so the fact that all the main parties were pushing for it doesn't count? I'm sorry but your argument doesn't stack up at all. Votes in a referendum don't mean anything in a general election. |
