So everyone is talking about the marriage referendum on friday but i hear little or nothing about the Presidential Age one.

What are peoples opinions on this one?

Is it a good idea to let the age be reduced to 21?

I can't see anyone at 21 really running for president but then again if some of the universities got together and put up a candidate would they have the numbers to have someone elected.

Or then again, maybe people just dont care.

You can't just decide to run. You have to be nominated by either four local authorities or 20 members of the Oireachtas. That may sound easy but it's not. As I said on the previous thread, if a 21 year old is persuasive enough to get a nomination and then convince one and a half million people to vote for them then they're good enough for the job.

IMO 21 is too young as they have little life experience per se! I think the average age of cabinet ministers is 57, so why would the government assume that a 21 year old could become leader of the country!

Also, don't forget to bring a pen when making your vote this Friday, those bookies pencils are a tad dodgy

Our president doesn't need life experience though. The Council of State meets to discuss any tricky business. Legal advisors cover the rest, and all speeches have to be approved and, edited if necessary, by government.

Why do they people of Ireland don't get a say in the privatisation of water?

No, as an office it's about as useful as tits on a fish or the Seanad but while we have it we might as well make the best of it.

But the governments decision is final in some cases, the president just signs things off without question! We don't need a president!

The president signs or not depending on the advice he/she is given. If the president doesn't sign, it's sent to the Supreme Court to have its constitutionality tested. Once the Supreme Court declares it compatible with the constitution then it cannot be questioned again.

Not quite. Every bill has to be signed by the president before becoming law.

People who vote yes to gay marriage should vote no to the age limit, forbthe same reason.

What would the neighbours think if they sent their head of state to ireland and they were meeting a 21 year old.

Thats one of the main reasons for voting isnt it, what people oitside of ireland will think.

I care, I've no issue with the age being reduced, there are some fine 21+ year old people in this country. It's a very appropriate referendum because it's a question of "Presidential Equality".

Ok, it's possibly not the most important reform to be put to the country, that said, seeing as we have it in front of us now, we should take the opportunity to remove it.

I don't know if we will ever see a candidate under 35ish in our lifetime, but if we want to consider ourselves a country of freedom and equality it just makes sense to take this stuff out of our constitution.

Interestingly, If a 21 year old is elected president and serves one term, the taxpayer will start paying their pension at 28 for the rest of their lives... this may undoubtedly change in the future with a retirement age clause, so like the other question on the day, this is the start of turning the wheel and then the fine tuning can be done later.

Where do you get these very precise figures from?

.

That's relevant to the presidential age in what way exactly?

.

I presume you're saying that you believe there are more important issues than the age of the president? Why not just say it then instead of insulting people who vote?

Re: Presidential age. I suspect there's quite a few worldly neighbours that are offended by their head of state shaking hands with a black president. A white spotty ginger 21 year old from a backward broke shite hole like here would be the least of their worries

I'm presuming you deliberately missed the point there.

Where did you give a reason for voting yes? All I saw was your suggestion that the only reason people here were intending to vote yes in the other referendum was because of what people outside the country think. Do you really believe that?

Well the way I see it is like this. The clowns that made the rules for being president done it in such a way that only the chosen few could get the over paid gig. It's not open to the ordinary Joe soap and never will be.I do hope the government plan to refund all the tax paid by anyone under 35 years of age as they are not as equal as the older pigs in our land !

That's my point. 8 year olds don't have a vote so even if by some incredible miracle, Jedward managed to get a nomination, the vast bulk of their fans wouldn't be able to vote anyway.

damn autocorrect on phone it wasn't 8 year olds that yelled loudest it was parents with them & teens who are now of voting age.

i like age progession with job level that's done elsewhere. if they are to talk in public, understand politics & represent they need experience under belt or country won't b taken serious nor would things they say.

Ireland is on par with most countries for age requirement why try fix something that ain't broken & works elsewhere without issue.

For what its worth William Pitt was 24 when he became Prime Minister and he is now regarded as one of the most successful British PMs. Bernie Devlin was 21 when she became MP. Michael Collins would not have been eligible for nomination when he died at 31.

I think that if there is an obvious political talent then age should not be a barrier

But, but, but... They still need to be nominated! It's incredibly difficult! Statistics also show that younger people rarely vote. If they're good enough, they're old enough.

By the way, Jedward is two people, so only one of them would be able to stand unless they got 8 local authorities or 40 members of the Oireachtas to nominate them. If they can manage that I'll vote for them myself!
