Check dual mass flywheel on diesels, and rear bushings. Flywheel will sound pretty awful starting and stopping, and it'll rattle as you bring the clutch pedal out, with the car in neutral.

A heavy metallic rattle from the back over bumps will indicate rear cradle bushings, most likely. Both fairly expensive fixes, but apart from that they're solid enough (we see them with 150-160k quite often)

The rest of the stuff is common sense, look for smoke, signs of leaking and crash damage.

As for how much ££? Check equivalent cars online is your best guide.

Depends on your average mileage, type of driving, budget and personal preference.

Diesels are typically, like for like £12-1500 more expensive in the north. If you're only doing a few thousand miles a year, it makes a false economy. Also, you need to bear in mind modern diesels are designed to be driven for longer, and have temperature reliant emissions components, such as diesel particulate filters, which can block and cause issues if the car is only used for short journeys.

Saying that, If you're doing 15k+, its a no-brainer.

Hope that helps.
