So everyone is voting yes on the marriage referendum because ye.are all sound but I found out yesterday very few people knew about the referendum to change the age of candidacy for presidents down to 21. I for one think that's crazy as a 22 I don't have enough life experience to run a country. What are everyones views |

The president has very little to do with running the country, he signs off bills that have been passed by government - so I don't see why the age limit can't be changed, the president is more for decoration then anything else! |

I don't think any 21 year old in this country would be modest enough to run a country at 21, or even be a decent mascot the way Higgins is, the adorable wee shite
I won't be voting to change it lest we see Ireland in a few years with its president wasted at the side of the road on rag week..
I also used lest, like I'm from the bible or something |

President does have the power to veto bills they believe are against the Irish constitution and is also commander in chief of the defense forces (thank god cause that mayo dope would have us invade everywhere just to have more people to tax to the bollocks)
Whether it passes is a different story and if it does whose going to vote for a wet behind ears presidential candidate? |

"I guess I didn't realise how little the president actually does here"
It's all upto Enda unfortunately, Higgins just travels from country to country looking cute shaking hands and looking like the 'simples' meerkat.. |

As mentioned already, the president has nothing to do with running the country. Any speeches he/she makes have to be approved in advance by government, as well as all travel plans. As for sending bills to the Supreme Court, there's a presidential commission made up of former Taoisigh, former presidents, legal people as well as political and presidential appointees to help. If I'm not mistaken, there were only two presidents who refused to sign high profile bills into law. Cearbhaill O'Dalaigh was denounced as "a thundering disgrace" by the then minister for defence Paddy Donegan and ended up resigning. The other, Mary Robinson, was hailed as a hero. Strange world
21..why not? If you can convince a million or more people to vote for you, you're good enough. It might get the youth out to vote for a change? |
