Kissing for me isn't always nessesary for sex but it can be really hot during the build up to the main event I also think that if someone is a crap kisser the chances are high that they will be crap at everything else.
It has to start slow and soft just a taste of what's to come, light licks of the tongue maybe a little nibble of the lower lip...
The two biggest turn offs during kissing are a big wet sloppy tongue forced Into Your mouth or someone who kisses the same way they eat soup! yuck!
