Read a few interesting threads on this topic recently on the other forums and it got me thinking.
Is it still as misunderstood in this country as ever?
Interested to hear your thoughts. |

Mental health is pushed under the carpet don't get me wrong it has improved but still needs more awareness of it. Too many people seem some what ashamed or not getting the support they need or deserve. I think we all know someone who is currently suffering. Just a friendly ear can do so much. To let them know you are there for them. |

People are becoming more aware about it which is a good thing compared to years ago, unfortunately male sufferes still think there is a stigma attached to it and hence why they don't talk about it or go get help, then there is the people who go look for help and due to funding they dont get the exact help they need or they dont get it quick enough, and doctors seem to think that prescribing tablets in every suitation is the answer which unfortunately is not the case, weve come a little bit along the road but we have a lot lot further to go

I would say it is yes. Depression for example is seen by many (including those suffering from it) as a weakness. Stops people suffering from opening up & talking about it. Which in turn leads to other tragic events.
Change needed in society regarding mental health to remove the stigma around it. |

Toatly agree and if people would only realise there is no shame in it and there is a world of help out there and always someone willing to listen. I know from experience, I thought that counceling would cost a fortune and going through the hse would take to long but there is places that make it about the person and not the money and you pay what you can aford. |

Your right, but its still relativly new for people to come to terms with and one of the most common forms is post natal and most men dont understand what is going on and dont want to spend the time helping out, and its something i have seen many times. |

It's still very much swept under the carpet. You'd never hear it spoken about in a sports club, but people writing and speaking about it, John Mooney and Fiona Kennedy for example, really helps bring it up as a conversation topic. |

I'm gonna be controversial here, but the behaviour of some profiles here with their fake profiles, abuse and threats of blackmail lead me to believe they're not right in the head.
Speaking generally,not specifically. |

What I mean is, if you resort to abuse and threats on here in private messaging which a lot of us have been the victim of,I'm sorry but I think there's something wrong with you.

True but I believe that if you feel the need to be such an asshole then you have to ask yourself some serious questions.

Some people are unaware they are suffering. Its not always a case of talking to someone. People need to be aware of signs of depression within themselves.
I agree with the too quick to prescribe drugs comment. Ive seen this too often when therapy or counseling would be more beneficial. Alas its way underfunded. |

The awareness has being improving it's slow and well behind where it should be it's getting there...
My pet peeve is though people say just go for a walk you will feel better tmw like it's just a mood that goes away... its a mental health issue which takes time.
So best thing to do is not offer advice and just listen! There is no quick fix |

There is such a big stigma with mental health issues and always will be, when truth be told 9 outa 10 people will be touched by it at sum stage of theyre lifes.. Mention having mental health problems and people think ur ready fr the asylum but ignorance is bliss I suppose... |

Sure all you have to do its look at the amount of adds on TV
2 yrs ago nothing - not even talked about but now guaranteed to see them. On the TV nightly. Posters up in doctors surgery and buses.
With the rate of suicides on the way up HSE had to do something. But trust them to spend on adds cheaper, but them not to really put a bit of money into this.
Every one can play a part - ask a friend are they ok but don't just take ya I am grand |

I'm quite open about my illness. if I had a physical illness , say, diabetes, I wouldn't try hide it.
And I would openly advocate medication, however controversial that is |

I've had the toughest few months of my life (and more to come) yes talking is fine but in some cases talking will get you no where. Especially when things are out of your hands/control! |

Talking is good right it don't cure the problem but a problem shared is a problem halved.
We all get knocked in life.
I find talking to people helps me.
And I try and encourage others to do the same. Doctors are very good handing out medication all too soon I think. .

I found that talking in recent times with people made it highlighted more.
Any time I socialised with those I talked to about it they always brought it up (because they care I know. But it just meant there was no escape from it for me)
Was getting it left right and centre. .. I'm not knocking "talking" but in some cases it doesn't always help. |

My father on the other hand don't would rather not talk about it. He has no mental illness he just burries his head in the sand with any daily troubles.
His attitude if he don't talk about it its not happening. |

That's me too! I'm a tad hypocritical as I'm the one who is a talker/leader in my profession. But bury my own things. |

I would like to see the effect of the radio/TV campaign a mentioned above, I wonder does it have a big impact, I'd say education is vital, if you can understand the human mind it is a big help to helping yourself not feel very low and would help the problem hugely.
Can anyone really know if they are depressed, we all have felt down and despairing at some time I'm sure and our culture and attitude here in Ireland almost breeds it.

I think there are definite improvements in mental health regarding our young people. Awareness is now being highlighted at primary school level which can only be a good thing.
It was never really talked about when I was growing up. You'd hear things like they're not well in the head or he/she has the melancholy. Sad really.
I think with the campaigns on the T.V you become aware about how you feel yourself and aware of how your loved ones are keeping too. |
