It is about time, this country is like it's back in the dark ages when it comes to things like this, every person deserves to be happy and if marrying the person they love will make them even a small bit happier then who is this government to stop them.
Who are they hurting by getting married? Nobody. |

Certainly hope and think it will be passed,it's possibly the only think I'll ever agree with politicians on!
And where's plenty here can blame pedophile priests remember not every priest was a pedophile and religion(all religion not just Catholic) the new Pope has welcomed homosexuals I think it's time to move on leave the bitterness behind and be proud we live in a democratic day of voting independence |

I, just like anyone else with a scrap of decency, hate what the priests done to children, not just in ireland but all over the world. I don't think religion breed the paedophiles, I think they hid out there and used their positions for their sick sexual gratification. So as much as I disagree with religion, and that's any religion, they are all modern day cults in my opinion, I hope gay marriage is passed as gay people deserve the same rights as anyone else, and not just to stick two fingers up at the Catholics who have had too much say in this county through the years as it is
Gay people deserve to win this vote on their own merit of spreading the love and not upon the basis of hating something else - just my opinion |

Not being pedantic or anything but I prefer to refer to it as marriage equality or same sex marriage.
My brother and his partner have been together years and I want them to be afforded the same right that I have.
The "No side" are trying to muddy the waters by introducing the rights of children as being their concern. So far they have been called out on this in all the media debates.
I am confident that it will pass but am certainly not taking it as a done deal. |

Definitly should be put true, this country has been stuck in the Catholic Ireland stage for way to long, it's about time the pros had their say on these matters |

Its not a done deal we all have to make sure we vote.
& with regards to kids it gives them more safety & stability for if the biologcal parent dies partner has no rights & kids get up rooted & whole world turned upside down on them.
If the pope can embrace the idea why people still have such issues & hid behind reason of religion.
every kid deserves security & everyone deserves happiness regardless of relationship make up |

I will vote for marriage equality. If two people love each other and want to express that to the state then that is great. It has nothing to do with the Church as this will be civil not religious marriage. Someone up the top there said every citizen should have equal rights, they should not. Everyone should have their human rights but your civil rights should be earned through your contribution to the country. |

What about the kids is always the line used to disguise hate.
Ok what about the kids exactly, is there evidence for you're opinion, oh no. Then it's coming from your homephobia, sorry but that's a fact though I believe through education that can change.
And some people think if a gay guy is against same sex marriage, that somehow that opinion has more weight, it doesn't. Gay people grew up in our inherently homophobic society they themselves can hate.
Plenty of ladies are against feminism. Plenty of ladies didn't want the vote at the time of civil unrest.
I hope it's a total landslide otherwise I'll be ashamed to be irish. One thing is for sure the no side will get out to vote so get out. YES |

I'm just curious as to who used that line, in what context, and how does it automatically insinuate homophobia or disguise hate? |

The Iona institute uses it.
There's no evidence to suggest kids are any happier with a traditional family than they are with gay parents or single parents. Ok.
They say kids won't know their dads etc etc gay couples will adopt. But sure straight people already do that.
If there was solid pychology lol or sociological theories Id evidence I could understand the view totally. But it's ised to put fear into the less informed and therefore shrouds homephobia and promotes oppression. |

Ok. I thought you were having a go at someone here and I couldn't figure it out. What you're saying though is pretty close to "disagreeing with this make you a homophobe" and I can't accept that. Plenty of people who object to it probably are homophobic, but not necessarily because they object to it. I've seen that guy whose name I can't remember on prime time before, he's a gay rights campaigner and is gay himself, but he objects to same sex marriage. I've no idea why but he certainly isn't homophobic. |

Gays living together should have the same legal rights as hetrosexual married couples. That includes inheritance tax, pensions .....
However civil partnerships were meant to cover this not marriage. |

I disagree with you on the rights thing. The marriage equality law will change adoptive rights because it will make all couples equal giving them the same equal adoptive rights. So when you vote for one, you're aiding the other. That might take votes away from the yes campaign. |

There are many differences between civil partnership and marriage. Marriage and family are protected in the Irish constitution, civil partnership isn't
besides that nothing says "i love you" like marriage, that's why we do it, "gays" just want the same rights and to declare their love like hetro couples |

I don't think Religion is the problem. People believe in religion because they feel it gives their lives meaning. Who wouldn't want to believe that their important, that there's something after this. Catholics don't preach rape, just like Muslims don't preach killing people. You have people who take their beliefs, and twist them and use it to vindicate doing something. Religion isn't the issue, just like Ask.FM isn't the issue for all of those unfortunate suicides. People are the issue in all these cases.
100% support same sex marriage all the same. |

Not really sure what issue is in the first place surely if two people love eachother getting married is beside the point... My opinion anyways. So when it comes to gay marriage well surely there should also have option available while for love shouldn't be the need of a paper to say you committed to eachother!
Same goes for all couples,
I would have concerns when it comes to adoption as you are involving another life into the equation but at the same time sometimes it's better to have loving adoptive parents than the miserable life some of this kids live otherwise |

I have no idea what his opinion is on any other issue, but he's a gay man who objects to same sex marriage and he can hardly be homophobic if he's gay, can he? What I'm saying is that labeling someone as a homophobe just because they don't agree with this is wrong. |

Ok if your against same sex marriage there is literally no logical or valid evidence based reason to be against it. Literally none.
Secondly if you say gay people can't get married etc.
You're opressing others, not letting them have the same rights.
In the same way a person who wouldn't let a black man have the same rights is racist, the man who denies a gay person the same as them is homephobic or oppressive in some yes?
Of course gay men can hate gays, look at gay bashers, plenty research there.
Don't forget we grew up in a society that had no tolerance for gay people conditioning us to be homophobic without knowing. Yes even gay people too, they can be homephonic, women can be sexist too. You can hate yourself that's possible. Look at gay suicide rates.
So everyone deserves the same as everyone else, if you're saying different well..... |

I'm sorry religion is a huge issue.
It can be pointed at for the cause of sexism and indeed homophobia.
You're saying religion doesn't preach killing if IThe you to actually read the books.
Cause they are full of it. These people that kill actually follow the book, the majority just cherry pick.
it gives excuses for horrible actts

That's a load of codswallop. It sounds good but it's still codswallop. If the man in question has a partner then he can't be homophobic as there's at least one gay person that he doesn't hate. If you're argument is used to fight the campaign for same sex marriage then the result could end up being a lot closer than it should be. |

Sorry. What. A gay man can't be homophobic why exactly?
It's a pity there's empirical data to suggest the contrary of what you say. Maybe base opinion on that, that's a well informed opinion.
Gay people should be able to get married if they chose just like I can. The children arguement doesn't work cause there's no evidence so it's an exuse always the last bastion.
A gay guy is against it so there must be something to it. Hmmm that's also silly, cause in turn Id think you'll find there's 99.999% of gay people for it. So in turn there must be something in that
You can't say one with the other.
Are you against same sex marriage? |

Ok can you explain how somebody who grew up in ireland a inherently homophobic society avoided it? You'd had to have had no socialization with the outside world and the same would have to be said of those that raised you. It's very hard and impossible almost.
It's not meant to offend, realizing it is powerful and should be a positive thing so you can really see and make positive change.
This isn't my opinion this is what every sociologist who has studied our culture. It wasn't so long ago that gay sex was illegal here. |
