the man is going to a black tie event to which he is probably invited.

i think renting a tux is a complete waste of money if you have a perfectly nice black suit.

Black tie or uniform are both acceptable but unless most of the men are going to be in uniform, it's showing off to wear uniform. Surprised you didn't know this already!

Black tie is black tie - all the men are the same. All the attention then falls on the ladies.

Maybe ask the lady you are escorting - she may not be comfortable with you not in black tie

( assuming ladies are going)

I have a tux but put on a little weight over the last few months so was looking for an alternative.

Yes I know a uniform is OK , I have another occasion for it in two weeks...

"I'm confused. If your asking what's an acceptable alternative then your going to obtain an alternative. Why not just go for the 'black tie' option?

It was more of a tux or black suit question."

So the question should have been:

Is a black suit appropriate to wear at a black tie event, instead of a tux????

An ordinary black suit works for me. A white work shirt and a sleek bow tie.

Don't forget the white pocket square. That defines what class is and class is good.
