Maybe it's just me but if a person has gone to the trouble of organising a social night and you can make it surely the polite thing to do is to message or text to say you can't make it? I feel it's beyond rude especially when the organiser went out of her way to ensure we had a great night.... Rant over lol

If you're talking about the Dublin Xmas drinks, I'm free for a very late invite. :P

Never received one in the first place.

But to stay on topic, yes... I agree! If you know you can't make it, it doesn't take much effort to let the organisers know. Besides, it'll increase your chances of getting invited in the future if you're telling, instead of not telling.
