We aren't tattooist and tbh after some of the horror stories we have heard we would go to a professional. It is becoming a popular hobby and its one of the reasons the health board is keen to get more regulations into the body mod industry. |

Iv seen some pretty bad ones myself but some of them have came from shops that are around years......its all about research when looking for a good tattoo artist.
You dont need any qualifications to work in a tattoo shop so going to one dosent insure you get a professional. |

Most shops will have a person apprentice for a numbers before they would let them tattoo. I know people who have done it and in some cases the person would be two years drawing on paper before even putting a needle on another persons skin. |

I am a tattoo artist, and I would agree that it is easy to get the equipment online but disagree that it is easy to learn, tattoo apprenticeships are hard come by and there is alot of work that need to go in to them, I had to work my balls of (for free) and work my way up the ladder, and it's infuriating that it is so easy to buy the equipment oline as many people feel they can just have have a go at it, the sooner legislation regarding tattooing in Ireland is brought in the better!

Yes your right,in some cases but not in all.plenty of shops in around dublin city that shouldnt even be open.people go in expecting a professional and get the complete opposite. |

To be honest if you didnt have a proper apprenticeship and you just picked it up as a "hobby" then you shouldnt be doing it!! Would you ask a guy who thought he was a carpenter cuz he bought a hammer and nails cheap online cuz he thought it be a nice hobby to put a roof on your house...no you wouldnt. Im not going to say anything more in this thread, ill leave it at this, its ppl that buy cheap chinese made tattoo equipment online and think theyve learnt it all from a boxset of miami ink and a few youtube videos who are ruining the tattoo industry in ireland. Its not something you pick up as a "hobby" its a sacred thing passed on from artist to another, not something for Joe Soaps to "have a go" at

Its a touchy subject man. People gave their opinions. That's what a forum is for |

Youve just made my point for me,if you were doing a proper apprenticeship you wouldnt be tattooing pig skin, youd either be tattooing yourself or your friends. Either way without a proper formal apprenticeship youll never be as good as someone who has served one, started from the bottom and worked their way up to being an artist. Its a privilage to be a tattoo artist not something and yahoo can do because theyve seen a few Youtube videos so when youve had your own studio for a few years and a huge customer basis, come back and then "maybe mr rough will fill you in".
Im well aware im coming across as a snobby prick but when some random person thinks they can pick up something as sacred as tattooing up as a "hobby" it really boils my blood,if youd gone onto an actual Professional Tattoo Artist forum, you would be lynched trust me! |

As long as you use proper cross infection control, disposable equipment; sterilisation equipment and an autoclave... and people are happy for him to ' draw' on them then fair enough. I know tattoo artists who have more knowledge about anatomy and how the body works than 5th year med students. But hey... let the endorphines loose... as a hobby! |

It was suggested to me to use pig skin at the start so i did.i then tattood myself, both legs.i then moved on to tattoo 12 tattoos on friends to date.all turned out better than i could have hoped and all coming back for future tattoos.......i will continue to tattoo people for free as i enjoy it and i havnt harmed anyone in the process.
Iv had this conversation with tattoo artists before.most would agree with you rough but one didnt.even sold me some pretty good equipment.
Anyway i wont comment on this again but thanks for the fabulous discussion and fantastic feedback guys..... |
