I don't like what he did but lets get it in perspective. Many of the people complaining about his actions disrespecting a community, by what he said, were quite happy to disrespect a community by shooting them. |

Doesn't it fly on the same number of days as it does in most city halls in England Scotland and Wales? It's hardly removed if that's the case. |

I don't think the comment was stupid
If you read what I said, I did not say that many people who complain shoot people. I said that they were happy for people to be shot. That's fact no matter how SF pretend otherwise now.
As to keeping the divide. You're probably right. |

Ah, I've learned two things from that.
.
1. There was only one side doing the shooting or happy for others to be shot. Hmm.
.
2. SF are the only ones complaining. Hmm again.
.
Well this was an educational day, although I'm not so sure about the veracity of either of those facts. |

No. It was not one sided and it's not just SF that complain but it's presumably not SF that have issued the death threat against Mr Campbell (unless you know different!) |

You can be quite sure SF won't be threatening him as he's probably their best election agent ever. A lot of people who might not otherwise bother going out to vote will be stirred into action by his coat trailing nonsense.
Is there a minority anywhere that he hasn't offended yet? Could it be that polarisation is in his best political interest, given that the gap between people who list themselves as protestants and people who list themselves as catholics is getting ever smaller and he needs to appeal to the more extreme elements who don't bother voting? Putting the "taigs" in their place might pick up a few crucial votes? |

Wow I only said he deserved shot with the balls of his shit. I also said they all deserve the same. The folks on the hill are only on the hill for the benefit of themselves which is why when you look at the parties there pretty much a family run business. There is easy money to be made in violence an when them feckers are raking it in the odd wee argument amidst them. Well that's just fuel for fire. Or money for old rope as some may say. |

I don't know, I suspect it's a similar feeling. I wasn't trying to get into a discussion about the rights and wrongs of the "troubles". I had just suggested that worse things had happened than insulting a language although it was (in my opinion) a crass joke and typical of the man. |

Appealing to have a thread closed because you don't like it might not be seen as very attractive either. Can you not just ignore it if you don't like it? It doesn't appear to have caused any trouble (yet) |

Isn't thus precisely the problem though? A politician says something and we can't discuss it because it might offend someone...only by discussing it and talking these things out can this whole island move on, IMO. Campbell shouldn't gave said what he did and should be pulled up on it. Again, that's just my opinion! Doesn't make me a bigot. |

some threads are made to be slammed, like this 1
not correcting you duffer and i hate the grammar police here but i had reason to check this out lately and i always wanted to know, and ill share my new found knowledge with you all
the correct term is "this thread isn't about you and me"
how you know if its me or i is you read the sentence without q the "you" in it and see which suits best,ie "this thread isn't about about me",so you use me
like i said not correcting anyone i just found it interesting and am sharing |

It's not a language it's a dialect. Two different things.

That's like saying Shakespeare would disagree with today's modern English. Scots people tend to write as they speak anyway. Just go in the Scottish chat room and you will see it. That's not a different language it's just how they do things. |

If he had have said something mocking any other language other than the Irish language then there would've been a much bigger uproar. And "ulster scotch" is not a real language like somebody else said, it's a dialect. Because some people spell words like they pronounce it does in no way make it an actual language.

I assume you meant opinion?
Tbh my original comment was actually aimed at you, because bringing this type of conversation with no input yourself can only be intended for one reason. To cause controversy in an already divided community. Swingers don't give a shit about politics so why start a thread such as this with no real opinion yourself? You have form for it so to me you have an agenda..... |

The last 2 threads started by this op were divisive and clearly aimed at causing friction and/or getting a dig at the "other side".
I'm all for open, positive discussion and threads where there is a general benefit, ie it's fun or of interest to a majority of people, but starting a thread that causes strife and sectarian division is just nasty.
Please stop and let the majority get on in life with a degree of harmony intact |

For many years Punch magazine ran an article called 'Parlez Franglais' which mocked the French language. Never a problem. Maybe the Frencheck knew they had a language and not just a dialect of Scots gaelic! |

Despite what the OPs motives may or may not have been, I didn't see much in the way of controversy or divisive comment on this thread. As regards the comment about the thread being useful for showing up the bigots, it may actually be more effective in showing up people who don't understand the meaning of the word. I also can't imagine that this thread has changed anyone's mind about any of the posters. I'd love to know if it had, but I really can't see how that's possible. By the way Duffer, your comment about how "swingers don't like politics" is a bit of a sweeping generalisation. I'm perfectly happy to presume that given that swingers pop up in all sections of society, there are plenty of swingers who do actually like politics and even enjoy discussing politics, and as for this not being a forum for discussing such things, well the gift of free speech is a precious one. The topics that nobody wants to discuss end up with zero posts. Let's not make a mountain out of a molehill. Buíochas. |

If we add Gerry Adams statement last night in enniskillen into mix, i think Geoffrey's currying of yoghurt slides somewhat into the shade,as in Gerry's words unionists are just bigoted bast##ds,hardly a play on words or language.Have the politicians started to lose the plot all together or was Gerry feeling left out of the limelight ? |

From what I've seen of it he was referring to the bigots as bastards, not unionists. It was a poor choice of words though and threatening the bigots with equality probably won't go down well either. |

Having heard the recording, I think Adams was actually calling bigots "bastards" and not unionists as a whole. I would agree with this, as I believe that all bigots, from any persuasion, are indeed, bastards! Unionists in the north have for sometime now been seen (rightly or wrongly) as anti-gay, anti-Muslim, anti-Irish extremists (such as Mr Campbell, if you don't believe me check out his Facebook page). No doubt the Indo will have a field day now with Adams remarks. |

I'm dismayed at how divided we are, at heart and wonder would such debate be welcome at a party? I doubt it, so why use the forum for it?
There are endless arguments on both sides but what relevance does it have?
Campbell was an ass but I actually found the initial comment, quite humorous and no different to the daily slanging matches in Westminster/Dail Eireann. So fas as I am aware(genuinely), Irish is not the first language of any of the mla's at Stormont and the use of Irish is a ploy to antagonise the Unionists. That's not a defence of the Unionists, their behaviour is equally as bad but there is an argument that this is blown up out of all proportions? Looking deeper into it, in the 2011 census, only 1.8% of the population of the republic put Irish as their first language? More people speak Polish, on a daily basis, than Irish(obviously due to the number of immigrants).
Is this not another case of one side, going out of their way, to be offended by the other? |

The point being if Campbell had made fun of the Polish language or Polish community there would be uproar. So what's the difference? "
And he could recycle the yoghurt joke as ski is a major producer! You're really the DUP scriptwriter aren't you! |

"I'm dismayed at how divided we are, at heart and wonder would such debate be welcome at a party?
