He was.... but well before I was born.
The charts were different then.... you had very few artists. saying that the few were proper musicians as opposed to the shite that thrown out these days |

Big iron on his hip, El Paso (both Marty Robbins) Big bad John (Jimmy Dean) remind me of roadtrips with my folks and my brother as a child in an old ford escort. They were on an old mix tape, other songs like indian love call, stuff by Slim Whitman etc
