Absolutely agree, having visited the beaches a few years ago it really put the scale of the operation into perspective.
It must have been terrifying. Apparently the men who were in the first wave leaving the landing craft were mostly 'green' and hadn't seen any significant action before then because no experienced soldier would have willingly gone and had an extremely high chance of dying. |

It's public, air what you want.
Their sacrifices on the sands of Normandy & supporting efforts inland by the airborne divisions helped free Europe from Hitler's veil.
They earned their respect & won't be forgotten.

Hitler was a psycho, fascism is abhorrent to me and I consider this civilisation to be immensely preferable to other scenarios when I run the "what if" scenarios in my tiny little head. Also, the individuals, the rank and file soldiers, were braver in the face of terrible horror and atrocity than I can get my head around.
But please don't think that it was as clear cut as the goodies v the baddies. The circumstance of fascism's rise was entirely of the allied powers' making, there were was crimes on both sides, and Britain and Russia were societies ruled by venal elites that were entirely comfortable with their own policies of mass subjagation.
Not even lions led by donkeys. Brave, honourable, unlucky sods led by fucking rats. |

They were sent as lambs to the slaughter. Another example of poor men fighting rich men's wars.
Hitler was trying to conquer Europe like the British empire tried to conquer most of the planet and slaughter an unknown number of civilians, which were not soldiers, in foreign lands. They still occupy foreign land on this island. There's very little difference in what Germany tried to do and what the British did before and after the second world. But people don't want to hear that. |

combination of a populist policies, a down trodden population and brute force. This is actually a pretty decent timeline if you're interested: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/history/mwh/germany/hitlerpowerrev1.shtml |

it just amazes me!ive watched lots of documentries on hitler and his life,i can understand why the german ppl followed him, they thought he wud be the making of germany cos he was so passionate about the germans, but i just cant understand how the members of parliament made him the german chancellor in the first place, knowing how violent he and his party members were,in the end ppl just followed him out of fear!surely the british and americans cud have done sumthing to put a stop to him, they all knew what he was doing and what his final plans were! |

I don't think that the majority of Germans were following Hitler out of fear:- My understanding is that after the first world war the German nation had been oppressed, had their national pride eroded etc. and when Hitler came along he promised to give the Germans all of that back. He was an incredible orator, and was able to whip up emotions, and the Germans got carried along on a huge wave of emotion and hope.
With hindsight we can learn lessons, but at the time, could anyone really have foreseen what he was capable of doing?
It's frightening to think that a nation of civilised, mostly respectable people could be so brainwashed |

couldn't say it better myself, you saved me a lot of typing. Its scarey what a charasmatic man, with a ready made scapegoat and single minded vision can do. Pure evil, and unfortunately the state of Germany at the time was the perfect breeding ground for what ocurred |

When people are made to feel at their lowest , that they have been humiliated and that the only salvation is pride......it's easy to rise to great orators !!
For all his defaults and evilness....Hitler was a master at motivation and oration . |

Pleasantly surprised at the support shown for the commemoration of those people that took part in D Day.
Nobody can actually say where we would be today without their sacrifice but that's not really the point. The sacrifice was made |

I think there's a huge difference between what went on in the past. Yes Britain and other colonial powers are responsible for exploiting other nations and ruling for their own benefit but Hitler's policy of systematically eradicating certain groups was just pure evil. |

I think you did a great thing posting this. You have my respect along side the men that gave everything that day.
My respect is for the courage to face your fears and still do what you believe to be the right thing as all the men on D-Day did on that terrible day. |

Got to say the story of the 90 year old on the news who escaped his care home to go to Normandy was heart lifting and funny, it showed that the older generation give a fuck about things, it ment the world to him to attend and attended he did wether it killed him or not
how a days we just sit back and let things just happen ie higher taxs petrol prices etc without a fight we really need to get are balls back and fight back, wish I had half of that mans passion to get what he wanted
