Never too late. I can't swim out of my depth yet. (Keep meaning to go learn)

The one thing that I found reassuring was learning to float.

i can stand in water up to my neck but anytime i tried to swim on holidays id get about 15 feet and then panic and end up splashing around till i found my footing

It's a confidence thing. Proper lessons might help. Stick with it and it'll come

My town

My mother was in America and could not swim had a scary moment in miami beech.

Promised herself to take lessons which she did and at the age of 45 became a confident swimmer.

It's NEVER too late!

I was exactly the same as you until about 5 years ago... Would never go out of my depth.

I built up my own confidence just by bringing my daughter to the pool.

I then competed a diving course through my work and am now a member of a diving team, although I still won't class myself as a swimmer!

It's the confidence and self belief that helps.

Go ahead and do a swimming course, it will really help with your confidence.

Best of luck mate!

I did a six night course before my holidays last summer. Not hugely successful as I ended up being able to do a breadth only. However it came up trumps in the sea where it's obviously much easier to swim. Still can't swim unless I know my feet can touch sand however....

But I think a healthy fear of the water is a bonus to us anglers mr laid!

But age is definitely not a barrier, and the aches in my arms afterwards told me it's damn good exercise ...

A great way of building up your kicks is to try holding a football or float under your chest, head up and kick, gradually increasing your distance. It will also make you more confident breathing in water.

Worth a try...ive a family member who started learning in her fifties!!!...i nearly drowned as a child...so im also terrified...i can swim a little but cant keep afloat for long...i started learning in the shallow pool by going underneath the water...would so love to be a strong swimmer....

Really important life skill. Touch wood you'd never need to but in a accident situation where water was involved, having someone who can't swim would be extremely difficult for everyone else.

I'm a bit of a weirdo then as I prefer swimming out of my depth mainly cos when we where kids we swam off a pier where very rarely you touched the bottom. Like most things it's all about confidence

I've never thought about that before OP, I was going to say if your propelling yourself underwater you can swim but really it's completely different. Diving is very serene, more like gliding. At least you are comfortable under the water so all you'll have to learn is breathing & arms. Good luck if you decide to sign up, you should.
