Hard work and nutrition, depending on what your specific goals are will determine what type of physical activity you should be doing but ultimately nutrition is what will be the most important factor |

High intensity interval training always has excellent results or even something like kettle bells as u see results quickly which in turn provides excellent motivation. |

H.I.T can b very hard on ur joints if ur a slightly more mature dude like me.
Id def hit the weights and mix up heavy lower reps with lighter high reps, about 4 weeks heavy and 1 week lighter
And cardio of ur choice

i aggree. HIIT is great and it can be applied to different types of training.
i do it with body weight exercises and sprint training. burns fat a lot more efficiently, tones you up, builds some muscle and you can be finished in under 30 mins or less depending on how hard you go at it |

"Actially im mixed up.I kno nothin about high intensity interval training.I was talking about high intensity training as favoured by mike mentzer.super heavy weights for 2-3 reps
"
your right hal
i was doing heavy weights for low reps a while back and got tendonitis. its taking ages to clear up. had to stop all weights. thats why i am doing the HIIT with no upper work and i think its great. |

Just so you know, while any cardiovascular activity has its benefits, if yoursole ppurpose in doing it is for weight loss then it's your diet that will determine it not your training! For example if you burn so many calories through exercise but then you eat crap and take in more then you burned, then your body will store those excess calories as fat! It's all about calories in v out!
If i were you i would look into, and calculate your bmr and tdee and reduce it by no more then 1000 calories in order to lose 2lbs a week while lifting heaving and eating high protein, high fat diet! |

Low reps/heavy weight is good for strength gains but hits your central nervous system hard so you wouldn't want to be doing it too often each week for example!

80% diet 20% exercise.
You can't out train a bad diet.
You'd need a mix of weights and a small but intense cardio session at least 3 times a week.
I'm taking protein after work out and a few other supplements.
I'm also dairy and gluten free since January and loving it!
Best of luck. |

Well then assuming his goal is weight loss, he technically doesnt need to exercise at all unless he wants the health benefits of cardio!!
I dont do any cardio, like i literally barely move each day lol and i have lost over 20lbs in the last 4 months although progress has slowed recently as my body fat % dropped |

Not recommending no cardio at all, Cardio is great and has lots of benefits but technially its not essential for weight loss ...It obviously helps burn extra calories but alternatively you could just cut those extra calories from your diet so you wouldnt need to burn them!! |

Thanks for all the replies guys!
Getting fit again is one of the goals but i think that and the weight loss can go hand in hand nicely.
I will keep the thread posted on progress- my starting weight from 2 weeks ago 18 1/2 stone onwards and downwards |

Ye the cost of supplements is crazy, Luckily the lad i buy from looks after me but he doesnt stock much variety anymore!! I usually stay away from any protein powder that has taurine or l-glutamine in it though! Cellucor make one of cleanest profile powders , similar to on but tastes better, it just costs way too much! When ye consider what the contents of a rub are worth, we really do get fleeced ha |

"Eat less & move more !
Is that not contradicting ur no cardio advice"
Who advised no cardio? Specifying that cardio isnt necessary to lose weight is simple specifying a fact!
Cardio is helpful in burning extra calories and its obviously beneficial health wise but is it necessary if your eating in a caloric defecit? Answer is NOPE |

Personally after having to start fitness all over again after two knee replacements l started with kettle Bell classes to get a quick working class to encourage myself (and thinking a 6kg Bell was heavy lol) .then added free weights and circuits in as I progressed. Now a year later I'm dead lifting 85kg in strength and conditioning and doing cross fit and using 24kg Bell ..... it kills but u feel so much better for it and love the feeling of having worked my muscles. . Gotta start somewhere. .. good luck. .. keep us updated

Would it not be better to give advice on a fitness regime including thread mills exercise bikes rowing machines walking and other exercises to that effect instead of making it into the macho "lift weights" my cock is bigger than yours argument. The reason lifting is recommended alot is because it builds muscle, changes body composition, more muscle = faster metabolism and that lifting also burns calories Its al down to an individuals goals though as you said and what works for one person doesnt work for everybody! |

No, at least your asking me what i mean btw lol The fastest way to lose weight is to eat at a defecit and do lots of cardio but you risk losing muscle mass doin this so your total weight loss wont all be fat loss! Ye should always focus on dropping body fat not total weight loss |

But lifting weights runs the danger of increasing body mass if not collaborated with a proper cardiac regime does it not. |

Lifting weights only results in adding mass which changes body composition! It doesnt result in larger mass unless you eat in a surplus to support muscle growth! If improving the you look is your goal then id def be recommending weights but its all down to what a persons goal is |

Would it not be better to give advice on a fitness regime including thread mills exercise bikes rowing machines walking and other exercises to that effect instead of making it into the macho "lift weights" my cock is bigger than yours argument. Why don't the two of ye meet at dawn for a dual and just get it over and done with.
The reason lifting is recommended alot is because it builds muscle, changes body composition, more muscle = faster metabolism and that lifting also burns calories Its al down to an individuals goals though as you said and what works for one person doesnt work for everybody!
Ok so you are saying that lifting weights is the fastest way and best way to burn calories and lose weight then
No, at least your asking me what i mean btw lol The fastest way to lose weight is to eat at a defecit and do lots of cardio but you risk losing muscle mass doin this so your total weight loss wont all be fat loss! Ye should always focus one dropping body fat not total weight loss
But lifting weights runs the danger of increasing body mass if not collaborated with a proper cardiac regime does it not.Lifting weights only results in adding mass which changes body composition! It doesnt result in larger mass unless you eat in a surplus to support muscle growth! If improving the you look is your goal then id def be recommending weights but its all down to what a persons goal is "
So with the OP directly asking to lose excess weight he has been given a lot of advise on how to increase body mass. Wow I hope the Op is reading this. Best off get some advice off someone you trust and not from here it seems. |

You dont get it ... Losing weight shouldnt be the focus!! Losing body fat should be!! and to do that you shouldnt lose it too quickly and you should lift weights to hold on to your current mass when doing so , sp that you ensure any weight lost is all fat and not muscle!! Alot of people just think lots of cardio and eat less is the answer and yes it will help you lose weight but it will canibolise your muscle tissue to and alot of the weight you lose wont be fat loss so yall end up looking smaller but your shape will be identical |

"Just so you know, while any cardiovascular activity has its benefits, if yoursole ppurpose in doing it is for weight loss then it's your diet that will determine it not your training!
OP has nutrition covered
Well then assuming his goal is weight loss, he technically doesnt need to exercise at all unless he wants the health benefits of cardio!!
I dont do any cardio, like i literally barely move each day lol and i have lost over 20lbs in the last 4 months although progress has slowed recently as my body fat % dropped "
You are joking right??? Ive 36lbs lost in the last few months from diet alone... the weight loss has almost come to a standstill. Are you telling me that a bit of exercise wouldnt boost the weight loss again while keeping up the new diet????? |

Roxie well done on the weight loss so far
If you have plateaued then you do need to up your exercise. Don't need anything too strenuous or scary. Swimming once a week. A skipping rope in the back garden. A mile walk at a speed where you are short of breath
Dancing in the living room. Stepping on your own stairs. Using the stairs. Just moving more then you have been. More sex
You have to spend more energy then you take in else you won't shift anymore weight and eventually what weight you have lost will come back |

It will come, or you may need to look again at your diet. Too little intake and your body will go into starvation mode and horde ( convert to fat) what you are taking in to protect its self
It's a juggling act But sometimes you can get too hung up about having to be a certain size weight when your body actually says " this is me and this is good"
The charts all say I should be 8.5 stone. I'm a bloody stick insect at that weight. My body looks a lot better and I'm a lot happier at 9.5 stone. Over 10 and I'm fat ( I'm over at the moment but I've no inclination to be worrying at the moment and who trusts a skinny chef anyways) |

I'm the same with the bread. I adore it. Get through a loaf myself every week. Add to that naans, pittas, garlic bread and the odd soda
Thing is I feel so bloated after just one slice so I know I should knock it on the head but its too bloody lovely
As for the Zumba. I bought a disk for the wii. I got as far as opening it, and passed it on to the daughter |

It's true about the starvation mode. Im guilty of this. Going all day not eating and just having a dinner. Not intentionally. Just my lifestyle for years. My metabolism was f****ed. bad habits I got into. Trying to teach yourself to eat more often is just as difficult as trying not to eat as much.

Being in full service during most people's meal times has wrecked me.
Most nights I'd be finished at 11, and come midnight I'd be starved after eating only toast for brekkie around 9pm
Learning to eat a meal at the right times is a skill I've lost. I find it so much easier to grab a sarnie or cheese and biscuits. And finding the inclination to cook a healthy meal after being on the grill all day
Indians for me the biggest problem is actually putting food in my trolley. After a days cooking I've no interest in eating
So it's a loaf of bread and a sandwich does |

1/2 a stone in a week is fantastic. Especially if you have already corrected diet. Well done you!! |

"is there any exercises, fitness classes or other activities anyone can recommend to me that they swear by to keep in shape?
Im returning from any injury that prevented proper exercise and also resulted in me putting on alot of unwanted weight!!
thanks in advance for any tips "
speaking frm experinces the only way to lose weight is to eat less calories than usual and do reular excercise, for example,if u eat 500 calories less a day 7 days a wk and u shud lose at least lb of fat per wk,and if u do an hour of vigorus excercise a day u shud burn roughly 500 calories or more ,so u cud lose 4 lbs a wk!i find keeping motivated is the hardest part! |

"High intensity interval training always has excellent results or even something like kettle bells as u see results quickly which in turn provides excellent motivation.
yeah kettlebells looks interesting, would high intensity training be in classes or I need to make up a plan for myself? Thanks for the advice"
u can do it yurself!they say tht 15 of high intensity training wud burn more calories than an hour of slow paced jogging!there a lots of workout routines on you tube,im doing a jillian michaels one at the moment and its hard work!! |

I started with a personal trainer this morning .. I'm weak !! I have never felt like this after a session . It was amazing but so tough . Going to do three per week until I'm confident about technique etc and then maintenance .. I'm excited . |

As others say, your diet is key to removing the weight. You don't mention the type of injury you suffered but I would think that any exercise program you undertake at this early stage should be focused on rehabilitation - ie strengthening weakened muscles. Going headlong into a rigorous regime could cause re-injury.
Just my 2p |

Thanks for your insight much appreciated. I went through physio sessions before that and was assessed prior to get back into decent exercise so its not a problem Yeah youre right about the diet, even on the days im not exercising my weight is going down |

"It's true about the starvation mode. Im guilty of this. Going all day not eating and just having a dinner. Not intentionally. Just my lifestyle for years. My metabolism was f****ed. bad habits I got into. Trying to teach yourself to eat more often is just as difficult as trying not to eat as much.
This was prob said earlier but small meals every 3 hours.speeds up metabolism.
Im trying. Find it difficult to change my bad habits."
me to. ... I the same but I just don't have the appetite to eat so often. .I just rarely feel hungry |

75% of the work is nutrition the rest is in the gym. Thelikes of sprints is working well for me at getting weight and body fat % down but everyone is different. If your looking to stay trim probably medium weights and loads of reps with free weights is best bet along with sprints but to bulk go heavy weight with about 5-6 reps. Hope this helps |

"15 mins a day,pussups,sit ups,pullups and dips!
Pick ur reps and go through the set for a constant 15 mins, then get bike and start climbing hills on it.....I use no weights or gyms....waste of doe in my eyes!
PhD pharma whey ht a must.
"
Agreed, traditional methods like above as well as high reps low weight free weights will burn calories and tone your body without too much strain on your tentendons, joints etc. At the weight your at cycling, speed walking or swimming would be good options. Cycling will take up a bit of time though. Good luck with it it won't take long as long as you keep a eye on your calorie intake but if your energy levels drop you'll probably be low on essential vitamins or minerals. Plenty of protein intake for muscle growth. |

Minimum of 3 times a week to progress your fitness which obviously makes things easier but also great motivation as you can see yourself improving quickly. 1 day a week and your starting from scratch there abouts every week. Twice a week not much better. Well done and keep up the good work |
