The death of celebrities....

Jump to: Newest in thread

Hi guys, Hopefully this doesnt cause controversy! Its just an opinion after all!! Its also not related to Peaches geldof but rather the death of celebrities in general .. Hoever i will reference peaches geldof as it happened today and is most recent!!

As everyone knows, Social media has gone mental today with the news of Peaches geldof's death! It seems everybody is wicked upset/distraught almost as if they have lost a loved one (judging from the comments i saw on facebook posts) This is a regular occurrence whenever a "celebrity" dies!!

What bugs me is that i cannot understand why we show so much compassion towards people we never met or never knew yet we moan, bitch and backstab the people we do know. We seem to live in a society where we care more about celebrities then we do about the people around us.

For example, A woman was killed under tragic circumstances today in dublin and there is not a word about it anywhere, not to mention the other hundreds of people that have died around the country tonight from various illnesses that tear families apart, Cancer being just one example. and its not just adults dying, its kids also!! I have no doubt people think those deaths are equally as sad but why is it that people generally think very little of death when its someone that didnt have celebrity status but when a celebrity dies... People are up in a heap as if they knew the bloody person!

I have also known people to die locally due to drugs etc and they have been labeled scum but when a celebrity dies of drug problems, its tragedy!!

I would also like to say rip to the women kiled in dublin today and to anyone else that passed away today for that matter! Lets not forget its not just celebrities that die and leave families torn apart

Meath

I have no interest in celebrities.. Dying/marrying/birthing.. Whatever..

I do feel for bob today as I remember when Paula took her life, but it was on a personal level not cause he's a celebrity.. I'd feel that way for any man that lost his wife then daughter

As for all the rest of them., nah.. It's all just white noise on the edges of my vision..

I know exactly what you mean Hifiman. We're a funny ol' species, no doubt about it.

People identify with celebrities. For guys my age Bob Geldof has always been there, he's like a brother (and probably as annoying too) so I took a bit of notice of todays news but that's about it.

Well I'm pretty sure anyone who passes will be mentioned by people who knew them on social media. If you're a celebrity, more people will pay their respects as they are more prominent in the public eye, several people died in Dublin today(I'm sure) which one are you referring to?

Maybe because the media don't think us Joe soaps are news worthy!!

I did sympathize with that tragic accident this morning on fb and always on any death I read about on social media famous or not.
