Ordering stuff from the US??

Jump to: Newest in thread

Hey guys. Not sure if it's against forum rules to post names of websites and stuff so i won't mention the site but basically I want to order a product from the US that sells it alot cheaper then here in Ireland and the also offer reasonable shipping rates but ive no idea if i would be hit with any taxes / vat? Does it depend on how much you spend or what it is you buy etc I have ordered lots of stuff online before but never from outside the eu

You tend to get caught for that now, so yeah, you will have to pay vat depending on product type. Ordered sth recently and had to Pay over a hundred quid to the guy at the door for vat

I think if you get the mailing company to say that it's a gift on the delivery label, that somehow circumvents tax laws, though don't know if this is true for south of the border.

Duty up to 28% and vat

However some items are duty free even if bought outside of the eu. But some items if made in china have around 48% added to them

You need to look at the Irish tax and customs website

Could some also explain to me how much I can expect to pay for this;

Bought a grill for my car for china

Paid €155 total including postage

Got a letter from customs during the week asking for the invoice before they realise the item..

Any idea how much I will be liable to pay

"I think if you get the mailing company to say that it's a gift on the delivery label, that somehow circumvents tax laws, though don't know if this is true for south of the border."

Only if the item is valued at less than £36.

Is it right that there is no vat charged if the cost of the product is under 20 - 30 euro? And apparently if it's under 150 while you may be charged vat you won't be charged duty or something like that?

Few ppl online seem to be suggesting that if the order is under 150 dollars then although you could still get caught for vat etc that you most likely won't especially if you don't use a courier service and just use regular post?

Yep, I bought shoes from the US and had to give the delivery guy a cheque for vat.. Ended up being about the same amount as if I'd bought them here..

That's my worry, if i was charged vat then it wouldn't be alot but because iam only saving around 20 bucks, it's not worth my while buying it if i do get charged vat

Authorities have really tightened up last year or so. Even days of getting it labelled as gift coming to end. But on good side might help employment here.

Watch the hidden charges I know the post office and FedEx charge an admin fee. Post office I think is 7 or 8 FedEx maybe as high as 15 euro. Post office look for fee when delivering, FedEx sent me the bill a month later and it was not based on invoice but on size and weight of package. Got them to redo charges as per invoice in the end

Don't think ill bother taking the chance, sounds like it could cost me more, essentially it would be safer and likely cheaper to buy here in Ireland, that's a first!!

Is there not some sort of law in place regarding the cost tho?

Iam being told that if my order total is less then 23 euro that you cannot be charged vat?? others say up to 150 without vat!!

Ive heard of ppl that have ordered stuff and never got any custom charges, vat etc but i have no idea what they ordered and what it cost

The site states that all items are labeled and marked accordingly for customs , What iam buying would fit under the category of nutrition/health foods

Not sure of size but weight is about 3-4lbs

Just go to the customs and tax page instead of listening to different stories. And the site I gave to fun will work out for you how much you pay
