I'm back coaching kids under 8's tomorrow night and under 6's on Wednesday! At our club we have a serious lack of volunteers to help out! Is there anyone here involved in other clubs with the same problem? parents love getting their kids involved but won't help out |

I work as a development officer (I won't name organisation/sport)
From experience we always encourage clubs to get qualified people to help (hard to come by I know)
Parents can get in the way. Not have the right etiquette/discipline and the age of 6-9 is a key age we call it "The Window" anything they learn now will come natural to them for the rest of their life.
Possibly if funds are there to send a parent or two on a (basic) coaching course/code of ethics course. |

Yeah its all about the right person with you. They don't necessarily have to know alot about the game just be able to mimic/reonforce what you do in a session and not contradict you.
Speak to the kids well etc. |

These guys have been working at the club for years and some

at kids because they've no etiquette. .. fair enough they're giving up their time which we respect but their kids at the end of day.
Go to your club suggest getting a parent on a course |

Not sure if its a time thing with parents but I do think most parents feel they don't have the skill set for coaching. In any case alot of parents do not have an interest in the sport but still would want their kids involved. And of course there are the fanatical fans that you see at every game, every training session, willing to drive to games, bring other kids with them and so on |

Same problem in most clubs especially GAA it's shocking the amount of money that is made in headquarters and isn't put back into the Grassroots.
It's actually a crime, a sin!!! |

"under 6's is difficult enough to coach as lots are 3-4 year olds and they're practically babies! It's hard to know what to do with them " funny watching them as they all just want the ball...think at that age I'd imagine just get them to enjoy it would be important, its gets serious enough at teenage level...

That's a fraction of what is made.
Very similar to banking problems with so called people getting big wages and pensions.
Give it time and it will come out.
I love GAA But I know its corrupt. |

There's corruption in all organisations. Mostly folk getting a wage/pension/expenses that do very little within the organisation.
I see grassroots coaching by the time that money is handed down there's nothing to show..

The problem many clubs have is their running costs. The county boards seem to require endless levies and many clubs find it difficult to try and cope. Hence the need for continuous fundraising. Don't think the issue is with HQ but more so at each county level |

Oh right, the gaa is corrupt because there's corruption in every organisation. Great logic, that is.I'd still like to hear who exactly is getting these big salaries for doing very little. Did the county board just establish itself out of the blue? I don't think so. The county board officers are elected by the delegates from each club so it's about as democratic as you can get. |

Being involved since mine where 4/5 and still involved 15years later there are lots of reasons why parents don't get involved some pointed out above but at the same time most county boards don't provide the paths for clubs to get parents involved as in free coaching courses for board na og trainers if this were done then its up to clubs to get parents to overcome their fear of failure and get involved i am sure other sports are the same |

Me for example I can do they coaching but I need other bodies to help out in other ways! U could have 20 under 6's! It's impossible look after them all on ur own

Ive done the gaa course as i got roped into doing coaching plus my parents are involved in like everything lol but u dont have to have experience and mostly with under 6's its only drills. The hardest part is keeping them from fighting in line waiting their turn but my magic solution - get them to pat their heads and rub their tummies lol
THo have to say why is this beingn posted in a swing site but each to their own i suppose |

i agree with all said above.it getting harder each year to get parent involved.i have been with the juvenile here for over 15 yrs, i love it . to see kids learn and try there best and the friends they make.we had a fun cycle this year raised over 2500. it helped the club out great..the gaa brought out a fun do pack afew years back, its great. i passed it around to some parents and a few got involved with the team after. try it.. |

I found u always have five or six parents standing around we used put then in lines of four and get them to do drills then ask the by standers to look after a line and tell them to just encourage the kids it worked for us |

I'm involved in sports at underage level and trust me don't let parents get too involved, they'll bust your balls and hang u at every turn unless their little lad or lass is getting all the attention, dads too competitive and mums to protective
But good luck and every success |

I dont agree parents shouldnt get involved in volunteer things such as this its role model behaviour on behalf of the parents.
I do agree tho that parents shouldnt be allowed to watch their darlings in training as kids manipulate this and parents allow it |

Surely having a good knowledge of the game is a must...
Nothing worse than coaches with every

parents need to help more not use training as a babysitter service we find a lot of this in our local club we are very involved ourselves and now a days you have to have at least 2 adults at a training night and if its mixed training you need a female as well its a shame to have to cancel training for kids because you can't get enough people to lend a hand |

If parents are willing to help I think you need to explain to them what You need and want from them. They are obviously doing it for the right reasons just dont know what to do or how to do it. Pull them aside before session starts and explain to them what u need, that u need them to keep the kids in line and to , as best they can, mimic what you are doing. Everyone has to start somewhere. Give them some credit for at least showing an interest in their kids activities. |
