People are rarely, if ever satisfied. We always want more and want our lot to get better and improve forever. So - say we find ourselves looking for work. And we find a job. And we are happy for a while but then start to get itchy and bored and dissatisfied We start complaining about hours, our duties, our colleagues etc...and we lose sight of the fact that we are lucky to even have a job at all...!

It's human nature to want more and more and to complain about it until it changes. This is a good thing sometimes - it's the basis of our sense of ambition.

But even the long-term unemployed here have it way better than 85 percent of the World's people - now go take a look at what life is like for people in Asia, Africa and we'd soon change our tune ! No more complaints !

We have access to food, water, medicine, shelter and education. Most people in the world have sod-all and we need to remember that more.

Being unemployed is HORRIBLE. It's demeaning, degrading, depressing, scary and very isolating. You feel hopeless and defeated and broke. And it's not like years ago. Way back when I was out of work for nearly 2 years - where you could wing it and stay in a houseshare and the dole and benefts would cover you. It's vicious now and I know people working who are even just above the breadline.

The social welfare safety net us disappearing. Everything is being privatized - water, healthcare, education. The state gas decided it does not "owe us a living" anymore. We are on our own and we had better be lucky...it's sink or swim now.

Maybe emigration is the only hope for those with youth on their side as regards getting work.

Its way too easy to get into a rut in this country and stay on da dole for years, but from what im hearing all unemployed ppl will shortly have to take work with councils etc for a small top up on there dole and refusal to do this means a cut in your benifits,,,,and its about time too,,,,,

I don't think people with dependents (carers, young mothers for e.g.) should have to do this. Or anyone who is genuinely unfit for work - through mental or physical ilness.

Long-term unemployed people who haven't bothered their asses should def. have to do it of course.

If councils allowed communities to run their own allotments, football pitches, car and bike workshops, and allowed them to decorate (murals, art projects) and keep their local environment clean, thete would be plenty of work around. Most of Dublin suburbia is dull and wretched and could do with a huge makeover. Communitues could run their own areas with the proper support and funding. It's not an impossible dream to try and transform it - and that would give unemployed folks not just work - but MEANINGFUL work.

such a minefield .. am sure there lots of opinions on this ..

to those who are lucky enough to be employed i say fair play .. if at times you feel the need to gripe about your job ,do so , its not easy .. but stick at it .. the only way this place will get back on its feet is if we are productive ..

yes the wages are shite .. its an employers market .. but it will get better .. we came through worse !!

looking at those that have it relatively easy and complaining about it will not change things .. the haves dont care .. it is bred into them .. maybe am being harsh in saying they dont care but it is a fact of life that there are different levels of society ..

to change that ?? being an entrepeneur ( not sure on spelling ) .. not everyone is .. having the courage and conviction to go it alone in business is something to be admired .. to those who do i say anything you get you wholly deserve .. to those who fail they deserve our admiration and hopefully you can build yourself up to try again because without you we will never succeed ..

thanks for starting this thread .. has set me thinking and could probably sit here all day typing

but those are thoughts for now

My job is starting to annoy me as its no challenge anymore and its getting boring. Ask the company are really becoming dicks to us, though the people I work with are sound.

I'm seeking a transfer to Dublin as I want to move back there, but if there's no transfer I'm not looking forward to the job hunt.

In today's economic climate they possibly should consider themselves lucky especially if they are on a decent wage. The problem is some jobs don't pay a livable wage and each month can be a struggle to make ends meet. Which is why I think some unemployed especially those on the big benefits such as dla, income support will or can not afford to take a minimum paid job cos they will be worse off and that is sad cos if there is no motivation this situation will not change.

The country is so lop-sided now. Any work that seems to be around seems to be in Dublin - but it's incredibly expensive to live here. It's a shame that de-centralization of the public service never worked out. Ridiculos in Dublin at the moment rent-wise but there are gonna be a good few more jobs around than Waterford,I'd say. Best of luck ! x
