Wakes in Ireland used to be held over three days and nights, with copious amounts of whiskey and porter consumed, and the farther west you went, the worse it got. That was one of the reasons why the Catholic Church changed the rules on wakes, cutting them back to a one night event. The other reason was to try and cut down on the amount of scandalous liaisons that occurred. Apparently they were they greatest source of unplanned pregnancies known to mankind at the time.
