Ireland has some fantastic place names.
This week i've been to Aghalee, Agnagallon and Ballybogey, little villages/gatherings of houses with class names. Drumbo, Moygashel, who named these areas?
There's many more. What's your favorite? |

Most placenames in Ireland are anglicised forms of the original gaelic names, and usually refer to geographical features or local landowners. My grasp of the language isn't good enough, but names with Agha or Augha in them come from acadh which I seem to remember means plain, as in flat. Moy and such like come from maigh, which I think is also plain, such as Mayo, Maigh Eo, the plain of the yews? Ok, that's getting boring now. My apologies |

Bally usually comes from baile, meaning home or simply town. Ballylickey is in west Cork. |

I think I'd come up with something a bit more comprehensive than that if I was going to the bother of cutting and pasting. |
