Wouldn't be a religious person, but from what I saw (as popes go) he was far from the worst. RIP

He was a much needed breath of fresh air in the Vatican. Worked hard to make the church a more welcoming place to those usually left behind. Definitely ruffled a few feathers. Sad to see him go.

He could have been Pope, along with Fr. Jack. But the feckin' Jesuits have it all tied up.

That whole corrupt organisation, he promised change, more input for female clergy, more gay rights etc.

He never delivered on any of this , its a club for old men run by old men.

They are guilty of covering ups plenty.

They dont want to pay for their mistakes in this country and are sitting on billions of Euros here alone.

A pointless organisation of hypocrites.

Firstly RIP. Maybe he was one of the good ones. He certainly came across that way.

However, this organisation is very similar to a government....

1. They tell people what they want to hear, but don't deliver.

2. They cover up their mistakes with zero accountability when they surface

3. If we don't follow their scripture we are ridiculed.

4. The leader isn't the person making the decisions

5. The people they affect certainly aren't making the decisions.

6. They are sitting on millions that is being spent in all the wrong places

7. The "workers" at ground level are the only ones who seem to be working for the people.....

8. Both are as transparent as a brick.

There are amazing admirable people working within the church, and it does help so many people. But the values of the church don't align with mine, which is ironic.

Catholic church expanding quicker than it ever has, it's just that here in the western world we have all become increasingly skeptical. Truth is if you really think about it, it's designed to bring word of god to the poor and helpless, and there really aren't too many fit that description here so it's expanding elsewhere, mostly Africa.

BTW I'm not a fan, but there is a huge misconception that just because our own doorstep has some shit on it it's a failed institution

There is a reason they target the poor, the helpless and the vulnerable.

Religion, all of them, are about power, control and exploitation.

Agree, used to control populations, reckon that's why it was 'invented' in the first place, but they continue to grow unfortunately

Not a fan of the Catholic Church for various reasons but he was a decent enough pope. A liberal (for a pope) leading the church was not something I thought I would see in my life time.

Exactly. There's a reason a religion from the middle east has its base of power in Italy. A lot of people don't realize the reason of why it spread across Europe the way it did.

Absolutely did not say Ireland was the only place anything, and never mentioned any dirty laundry, you misjudged but don't have the decency to acknowledge, took a chance to imply negativity to another male poster, troll.

Obviously I took that up wrong then, sorry about that. You didn't give me much time to show the decency to acknowledge my misjudgement but here it is, as soon as I saw your post. Sorry again. Hardly trolling.

By dirty laundry I thought I was referring to the same thing you were about shit on the doorstep.

I wonder if a certain, down on his luck, former MMA brawler and far fetched presidential candidate will consider throwing his cardinals hat in the ring?

Seems he might not have the support of the secret handshake brigade but that shouldn't stop him having a go.

I don't like the Catholic church but Mother Theresa was a good person, a good nun, she did so much good for those suffering in Ethiopia etc, she lived with them! She didn't live in hotels, she deserved her sainthood.

And, I have to add, I hate nuns, went to a school run by nuns but Mother Theresa was an exceptional nun. I'm glad they made her a saint.

Mother Thresesa was absolute scum in my opinion and was exposed long ago. She ran the greatest con ever seen. She extorted hundreds of millions in donations worldwide, and little to nothing ever reached the poor she claimed to be helping.

In the words of Christopher Hitchens, "she was not a friend of the poor, she was a friend of poverty". She promoted suffering as a gift from God and opposed women's empowerment along with modern healthcare and equipment.

In an era when the church was a horrible institution, she was leading the way!
