How would you define a nerd?

Would you consider them to be distinctly different from a geek? If so, how?

Can't remember which is which but one is more technology focused and the other is more academic from what I remember. They share lots of things but it's like goth and emo. Or Scottish and Irish. Or Scotland and Scotland. Damn scots, they ruin Scotland.

Everyone is a nerd.

Once you have a passion in your life and you can regale people with random facts, then you're a nerd.

A geek is a person who has a specific set of likes - sci-fi, fantasy etc.

You know that I know what I'm talking about!

"Biscuits is a nerd "

I know some pretty nerdy people... Gonna have to put biscuits to the test! 🤓

Wait - how does someone who's not a nerd check if someone is a nerd? Is there a standard nerd test or something?

I've always thought nerds were more insular academic focused

Whereas geeks have a similar focus but more in the celebration of a theme.

Like a nerd might understand the physics of the Star wars universe and write a paper on it and a geek would collect the figures and head to a convention in cosplay

They dissect quite a lot. I would say I'm either or both. I wouldn't imagine either would be insulted by being called either. However insulting their hobbies is a big no.

I always thought of "geek" or "geeky" as a physical thing as in "It makes her look geeky"

...whereas "nerdy" is more got to do with behaviour and interests like "she likes doing jigsaws ...what a nerd!"

Not here to judge btw

Real geeks don't use miniatures to celebrate Slaanesh.

The new Fulgrim model looks pretty good, shame he's not that good of a duelist. Mortarion, angron and magnus all beat him. Worse is they have auras.

Kinda freaks me out to think that Star Trek came out before the advent of the World Wide Web (the nascent internet was already a thing).

Do you think Star Trek would be substantially different if it was conceived post say, 1993?

Slaanesh is a Warhammer chaos god. Both Fantasy and 40k.

Khrone is more fun.

Star trek probably would have been more like Stargate sg1 in post internet age. Less word of mouth promotion, more through forums and web groups.

Which is a shame for sg1 as it had some good storylines and concepts.

But star trek would probably have focus on more stories about the technology instead of moral stories....

How do you think Henry Cavill will do in the new Warhammer series?

Stargate focused more on the sfx than anything else, I thought. Never got into it as it was too... superficial.

The science of Star Trek was overwhelmingly bullshit but it still valued (values?) science. One could argue that the morality was tied to a (now annihilated) foreign policy objective but that's a conversation for another time and a pint or it's metric equivalent.

I think he will do fine. He's a fan and knows the source material so if I think it will be good. Games workshop though have to take a hands off approach for it to work. Their space marines CGI movie was meh. But the pc games look good.

I like the science part of sci-fi, I like to try figure out in my own head would things work in the real world. Sg1 was set in 'the real world' and not the distant future or a galaxy far away.

All speculative sci-fi has one flaw, some part of it will become dated at some point. Either SFX, technology mentioned, morality and social themes or reinterpretation of existing science.

But, it does drive debate and openness to further understand and better our world

I like Cavill, he's a pretty decent actor and it's nice to know I could relate or chat to him. However, there's a snowballs chance in hell that he will be able to make something he would be proud of. I've never seen a company hate it's fans as much as GW. For a simple example, a fan animator made the best Warhammer animation I've ever seen to be sent a cease and desist or work for them. I think he's finally been given the go to make a sequel but that's after years of fan backlash.

Something similar happening in the rugby world.

Arguably one of the sports best content creators (Squidge Rugby) is frequently issued threats of legal action by the likes of World Rugby and the Six Nations with seemingly zero foresight or understanding of the hugely positive and beneficial impact he's had on the sport.

Administrators consistently shooting themselves in the foot.
