Punished for Grammar
Jump to: Newest in thread
Hi all, just a question. Should we be punished for bad grammar? I wasn't great at school and found somethings hard to understand. I am successful in my job, which is management. But get in trouble for my email writing. This happens here alot too. People use it as a reason to stop talking to me or correct me and block me then.
I don't purposely do it.
Or am I wrong and should I give up on here ? |

I'll be judged for this and that's ok but ..
People should know the difference between 'there', 'their' and 'they're' in their sentences. They have completely different meanings and yet they are used interchangeably. Honestly, I don't care if I'm judged for judging, I can take it... I think! Mrs xx

I think I came across wrong. I would love to be able to use correct words and punctuation, but I type and what I see or mean ,doesn't come out the way I mean. I am not trying to offend I promise |

I’d say it depends whether it’s something you are genuinely bothered by yourself. If you are self conscious about it, perhaps pop it into one of the handy AI tools on the phone, or web, for a quick grammar and spell check before sending. Appreciate that may be overkill in the heat of the moment, but just a thought.
But if you think people who over police spelling and grammar on here aren’t for you, think of it as a handy test to screen them before a meet |

The use of correct spelling, grammar and punctuation is important in the written word, but not so much it’s a matter of life or death.
I have lost count of the number of emails and text messages I have received where I have struggled to make sense of what is being written due to incorrect spelling or grammar.
Or even worse text speak.
It just creates unnecessary confusion and make you question people who end up doubting that you believe or understand what they are saying.
Grammarly is a good tool to use for checking your written word. There is a free version as well. |

I left school when I was 16. Wasn’t great at reading or writing but to date I’ve always held down a full time job and have my own side hustle with 97 customers. Fab is full of judgement. That’s grand. I get it that others like to find a weakness in others. I do try my very best not to judge others because of their weakness. Do i want to be involved with someone that judges bad grammar. Hell no. |

You are who you are, if that's a problem for someone, it's good that you know from the beginning... be yourself... I have the same problem because English is not my first language and I'll be honest, those who pay the most attention to it are sometimes the hardest for me to understand because they often use slang and various abbreviations that I sometimes don't understand at all. Sometimes before I send a message or publish a post I check it several times, many times I gave up, but I've learned to live with it and accept that others don't accept me... I keep going...I don't give up |

Hi OP.
Firstly I think work and fab are two completely different things.
If your in a management position you should be taking the time and using the tools to be clear in your communication.
Fab shouldn't be quite as rigid.
However I also don't think there is an excuse for laziness when composing posts/messages.
I'm dyslexic but there are so many tools on my phone now most people wouldn't be able to tell.
Does it mean goggling a few spellings of my tricky words then so be it.
I will slip if I am extra tired or in a rush. Like I'm brutal for your and you're.
I do find in here and in life in general you will be judge more by the content of your communication rather than the structure of it |

I'm dyslexic and sometimes my writing on here looks like a caterpillar has walked through an ink pad and on to the screen
I double check everything if I can but it's fun when playing a forum game and I miss out on someone because I've taken so long to write the answer
I was a lot worse as a kid in school and got beaten badly by my teachers so haven't got a clue about Nouns, pronouns or most English grammar to be honest but I do know the difference between their and there.
I hate text speak on here but couldn't care about spelling
In work every email and letter I type gets spell checked before it goes out
Don't worry about people blocking you because of the way you type or speak if English is not your first language as some have said
You'll find your ( not you're) tribe |

If I am in a hurry, I sometimes don't notice if predictive text has changed a word and off the message goes lol
I do like good grammar but hey, we are all human and not perfect and if spelling or grammar is your worst fault, don't lose sleep over it.
My sis in law is the worst ever to get a message from. My other half generally ignores her messages as her spelling etc leaves a lot to be desired. I can decipher it so all good lol.
She was a Senior Nurse for over 40 years but has a few anxiety issues now and her communication skills are just not as clear but who cares!

Short people do not have the ability to grow more, a 30 year old 5'8 man will only get shorter. On the other hand, you my friend have the ability to educate yourself, by whatever means you choose, it could be reading, it could be incorporating spell check more, grammarly or an AI to check your texts, you have the opportunity that the short guy doesn't. Communication on this site is difficult enough, but if you've misspelled or used the incorrect grammar, it tends to signify someone whom is either uneducated, or doesn't care. In saying this ,it is my personal opinion.
You can learn to write correctly.. |

I have absolutely no idea what you mean and I've just mentally dismissed your entire post as the comma between "this" and "it" in the last line is in the wrong place. |

As long as it’s not text speak, I couldn’t care less about grammar and spelling from other people. It bugs the shit out of me when I make a mistake but that’s just me.
The only messages I’ve ever had a problem reading were long ones with no full stops. That does my head in.
I’ve yet to see a message or a comment on a thread that I couldn’t understand because of misspellings or bad grammar.
If people are cutting contact with you because you misspelled a few words then take it as a lucky miss. |

Fab is not a literacy test. It’s for swingers and sex and as best I recall most people of all educational ability and none tend to like sex while some like swinging.
Just ignore them and if it still bothers you, you could always do a few grammar lessons on the internet to try and improve. Better still learn a bit of French and confuse them by responding in French. |

Haha if they block or correct you shows more about them and their personality than anything else. So much judgement about nothing. We are all adults and are aware people have different abilities writing into a screen should never be judged. Personally I have a lot of education 10+ years but am also dyslexic so my writing can be like a riddle at times. Thank goodness for autocorrect. I can’t see how what we type has anything to do with our personalities or whether people will click or gel together on a meet

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. I'm dyslexic and have worked really hard on getting things right when I type. Invariably I still get things wrong alot or misread and reply and make zero sense. Most people are pretty ok about it but some people do really talk me too task over it. Hasn't happened on here, but on the like of social media if I male a mistake I get crucified. It used to really upset me but with a bit of a change to my outlook I know no longer let it bother me, in fact at times I do it on purpose just to sea people lose the plot.
Honestly just ignore the haters and find peace in yourself and those who accept you as you are. |

I love the written word. Grammar, punctuation, syntax, and spelling are important to me personally. It's been instilled in me from a young age, and I'm learning all the time. I've always tried to ensure my children have a good grasp of it. I'm not perfect, nor do I expect perfection in others.
Here though? I need to understand what someone is trying to convey. What they write is more important to me than how it's written. After all, it's more likely we'll be communicating face to face, not submitting essays to one another. If there's wit and wisdom behind the words, that's good with me.
And I even managed to shoehorn an Oxford comma in there |

I wouldn't consider grammar a massive priority but sometimes people write an incoherent mess. I think since my writing has improved (still far from perfect), I find it easier to read back and understand myself more. Language is powerful. |

"Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma?
I LOVE the Oxford comma but, as it's more of a stylistic choice, I don't judge those who don't use it. Much. "
So if there's any other way
To spell the word, it's fine with me |

I'm Dylexic and find a lot of people questioning my spelling and grammar. They feel like shit when I tell them, that's if the conversation gets that far.
They should be more understanding over people disabilities and think before they mention anything.

Keep trying and treat your self to a paper dictionary and learn a common word every day. Oxford English is the way to go.
'Can we eat Nan?'
versus
'Can we eat, Nan?'
Grammar is important on paper, but can't be heard when spoken.
There are loads of infographics and charts on Pinterest that list the common mistakes, have a look and see what helps.

I wouldn't give up.
First of all I'm a qualified voluntary literacy tutor. I did this to overcome and understand my own problems. What I learned was that I was not alone, but online it looks like you are.
Believing you have bad literacy skills puts you in a prison, feeling judged keeps you there.
A simple fact is in the Munster region alone, 50,000 people can not read or write, or both.
50,000.
I learned I still make mistakes.
I learned I was literate, but was missing a few things. Things that should have been done but was not for various reasons.
I was born in a very disadvantaged area riddled with crime on a scale that was in the Sunday World week in, and we out. My address meant I could not get a job in the 80's.
My grammar and spelling issues certainly did not help.
I left school without qualifications. I was scared of the tests.
I was scared.
If you met me in life, you'd never guess, considering what my career actually is.
I went to a CBS. They failed kids. They beat them. I was one of them. I refused to learn as a way of rebelling.
I am no better than anyone else, but I'm equally not lesser regardless of those problematic early years.
It took me years to not only learn that, but to accept it and I decided to do something about it.
I wanted to understand it. I did. I learned, and I grew. I learned tolerance, patience, and a listening ear.
I learned to allow people to make mistakes because before I was judging them for it, when really I was angry at myself.
So this goes out to anyone who suffers. If it means nothing to anyone but one person, then it was worth it.
There is a way out.
Contact your local ETB for courses or guidance. Anyone looking to study or receive help with it can find free places.

Thanks for all the comments, The reason I wrote the post was because when I wrote a message to someone new. I had the line ' I hope I Peak your interest ' she wrote back it's Pique and blocked me. A simple misunderstanding I thought, but not offensive. It is like things like that I find strange, that people can be unset by the likes of that.
I am Irish by the way. And I have managed to get on in life. But while I have done courses I still find it hard. I don't intentionally do it. And if someone corrects me I apologise. Thanks for all the comments. |

You shouldn't be reprimanded for bad grammar, illiteracy or dyslexia.
However, there is no excuse for laziness or juvenile 'text speak', incomprehensible slang or unnecessary abbreviations, including insincere remarks. For example if you're going to apologise then do so, properly, don't give me a "soz".
