There’s a Full Moon at the moment…

Just wondering does it effect some people here with sleep or mood patterns etc?

Codswallop. Unless you're outside at night and are using the additional light to do something, then full moons have precisely zero effect on you.

🤔 Cos the moon has no impact on us??

It effects menstrual cycles and tides .. I think it's a powerful force we've become estranged from, but that doesn't mean it's not tugging at us.

The tides are caused by the effect of gravity between the moon and the earth pulling at the sea. It's a measurable effect because the two bodies are absolutely massive. The effect of gravity between the moon and a single human being is too small to have any effect. There have been quite a few studies done and the effect is purely anecdotal.

A full moon has the same effect as a streetlight in that it makes it brighter at night. Other than that it has no effect.

The moon is full 100% of the time. It's just that the sun isn't shining on it but it's there, doing the same stuff it does when you can see it.

People use lunar planting systems too that have been proved over time.

You can say it's anecdotal but a lot of knowledge that's been passed along is. Studies can be a blunt tool in their limited ranges

I'll have a read about that I don't know anything about lunar planting systems.

A lot of passed down knowledge is from long learnt experience and based in reality, but there is a fair amount that's just superstition also. It can be tricky to tell the difference.

Agreed. And it's just a bugbear of mine when I see 'science hasn't proved' .... such and such long observed phenomenon, then years later when scientists get interested *fanfare* such and such has been proved. (much like Columbas 'discovered' America)

Modern humans are so very disconnected from nature now, in the past we were much more aware and sensitive to it.

I am not sure if this is scientifically confirmed, but through observations of the surrounding world, people began to notice how much influence the arrangement of the Sun and Moon has on natural phenomena. On this basis, the lunar calendar was created, also known as the biodynamic calendar. It is a cycle of processes that plants undergo during the lunar cycle, as well as a list of activities that should be performed during this time. Everything depends strictly on what phase and what sign of the zodiac the Moon is in at a given moment. The centuries-old tradition says that the Moon has a beneficial effect on the growth and yield of plants planted at the right times. Different cultivation and care treatments used in the garden are assigned to different phases of the Moon.

As a horticulturalist I can safely say that the only things that matter to plants is light, heat, moisture and nutrition. Once those things are right, and different plants have different requirements, the plants will grow regardless of the moon.

Also, if you get a very hard late frost, or a drought, the phase of the moon won't save your plants.

I didn't write that it is so. I wrote that it is a centuries-old tradition and folk beliefs. The weather is certainly 100% has an influence on plants, and the position of the moon can have an influence on the weather

I think it's safe to say that the moon effects the tides and the tides do have a small effect the weather.. but there isn't anything special/magical that happens on a full moon that effects plants. The moons influence of gravity on the earth is not effected by the phases of the moon. The phases of the moon are created by the way the sun shines on the surface on the moon and this is a purely visual effect that does not effect it's gravity.

I'm just getting stubborn now 😂 With no vested interest or knowledge at all. But all I technically need to grow is the same as your plants food, water, heat, shelter. But that doesn't mean I'll thrive, or be my best self! So maybe the observers of lunar planting are going the extra mile for thriving plants 🤷🏻

But maybe ancient knowledge isn't valid now, maybe we've moved beyond it, or maybe it's just suspicion. Who knows

Yields from plants grown in hydroponic systems are higher than the same plants grown in soils.

Ancient "knowledge" was often kinda correct, as in it was often correct but for the wrong reason. A lot of it was pure coincidence as well.

Higher levels of melatonin are caused by darkness so being exposed to the bright light of a full moon may reduce melatonin levels and lead to excessive alertness and restlessness on moon light nights therefore affecting normal behaviour.

The same effect can happen with exposure to artificial light or blue light from electronic device screens.

On a clear night the moon can get your imagination going. Memories of romantic fantastic tales that feed your soul. I remember reading a book awhile ago, and it mentioned sharpening razor blades under a pyramid structure under a full moon.

As for the horticulture dude, I read a different book many years ago that wrote about connecting a fern to a lie-detector machine, beside a pot of boiling water. Live shrimp were dropped in and the plant registered a signal, when already dead shrimp were added to the water nothing happened.

Recently I read how time doesn't exist, it's just that our brains can't conceive it, relatively, gravity and the laws of the universe are not as we think. We know nothing, our science right now proves very little but we stand by it as if it has already revealed everything to us, it really hasn't.

Who's to say how strong the imagination is, who's to say that the moon doesn't affect someone strongly.

All I know is I enjoyed being young and not so sure of everything. I enjoyed the herb and moonlight many a night with a warm cup of mushroom tea.

You all should believe what you want none of this matters and we are all made of stars .

Personally Atlantis, Tir na og , the Anunaki and whatever magical world you like to think about , makes for interesting conversations and funky quirky people that I like to hang out with and share the good stuff , smoke a little, drink a little, chilling and talking.

The horticulture dude is just popping back to point out that the story of the fern and the lie detector was obviously a creative work of fiction, but a work of fiction nonetheless.

"Because he knows everything?"

Well he knows that a lie detector measures respiration, perspiration, blood pressure and pulse rate. If someone found a fern with any one of those things it would be a much bigger story than the shrimp one.

Also, have you even questioned how someone might attach one of those sensors to a fern frond?

The study you're referring to was conducted by **Cleve Backster** in the 1960s Backster, a polygraph expert, connected plants to lie detectors and observed their responses to various stimuli. In one of his experiments, he dropped live shrimp into boiling water and found that the plants registered strong emotional responses during the shrimp's death.

This experiment was part of Backster's broader research into plant sentience and their ability to respond to environmental and emotional stimuli. His findings suggested that plants might have some form of primary emotion or awareness.

There is skeptisism obviously around it as others have failed to replicate it ...

Jagadish Chandra Bose**, who demonstrated that plants can respond to different types of music and other environmental factors is another interesting one.

We know very little but assume to know everything.

Replication is one of the key ways scientists build confidence in the scientific merit of results. When the result from one study is found to be consistent by another study, it is more likely to represent a reliable claim to new knowledge.

Something happening once does not make it fact.

For those saying the full moon has no effect on people, go ask any long time Garda and see their response.

Definitely makes folks a touch more loopy!

Statistically crime and public order arrests increase at different times, usually at weekends, public holidays, etc. and those rises in crime rates far outstrip any increase at full moon.

The difference with the full moon is that confirmation bias kicks in. People believe that the full moon causes this so when something happens they remember the full moon incident above the others.

Statistics are a lot more reliable than anecdotal "evidence".

Lies, damn lies and statistics is probably the one you're looking for. As for your second sentence, I couldn't agree more.

anecdotal evidence may not be scientifically proven but is equally important and is also used to help in scientific work for example observations of experiences, without this evidence scientific work would not be possible... that is, science depends on them.
