Just read this morning that using ChatGPT to search uses 10x the amount of energy as a google search and uses half a litre of water for every 100 words it writes.

I have to admit that this extra energy consumption never crossed my mind and it will make me think about using the likes of ChatGPT.

Will it change your use of these services?

I've never used AI and hadn't even heard of ChatGPT until it was mentioned on here a few months ago.

Then again I've never had a job that required internet access so AI has no impact on my life.

Everyone needs it even if they don't realise it. How else could you compose a song about a naked Artificial Inseminator who dances as he works in twenty seconds using only 1 litre of water ?

"The Dancing Inseminator"

In a quiet little town, down by the creek,

Lives a man who’s got a job that’s unique.

With a stride and a smile, he heads to the barn,

But he’s not your average farmyard charm.

(Chorus)

He’s the dancing inseminator, so wild, so free,

With a little jig and a twist of glee,

He’s got the cows all lined up in a row,

A little dance, and they’re ready to go.

Oh, the dancing inseminator, the talk of the town,

In his birthday suit, he spins around!

With a flick of his wrist, he’s ready to go,

But it’s the rhythm of the dance that steals the show.

He’s got moves like the wind, swayin' so bold,

A farmer’s dream, or so I’m told.

(Chorus)

He’s the dancing inseminator, so wild, so free,

With a little jig and a twist of glee,

He’s got the cows all lined up in a row,

A little dance, and they’re ready to go.

Oh, the dancing inseminator, the talk of the town,

In his birthday suit, he spins around!

He moves like a storm, like the breeze through the hay,

With every twist and turn, he’s making their day.

No need for a suit, he’s all nature’s grace,

He’s got his own rhythm, and a smirk on his face!

(Chorus)

He’s the dancing inseminator, so wild, so free,

With a little jig and a twist of glee,

He’s got the cows all lined up in a row,

A little dance, and they’re ready to go.

Oh, the dancing inseminator, the talk of the town,

In his birthday suit, he spins around!

Now the town folks laugh, they don’t quite understand,

But he’s saving the herd with his own two hands.

So if you’re ever around, and you see him there,

Just wave and smile, 'cause he’s dancing with flair!

Most of the numbers are made up but water consumption in data centers worldwide is a big problem, particularly where they are drawing water from already stressed watersheds. Power generation and chip manufacture use enormous amounts too.

It won't change how I use it because ultimately how I use it won't even be a drop in the ocean compared to how industry is going to use it for research and labour. Pun intended.

The current media attention on water likely has more to do with pushing the price of it up for industry than protecting natural resources.

I know it can be a helpful platform for some.

The concerns about the energy it uses is worrying. Will it make people stop using it? Probably not. People still wear denim.

Realistically the only way to actually not use AI now is to not use the internet at all.

This time next year it will be integrated into every operating system, every search engine and every mobile device.

ChatGPT gets the name recognition but Google's Gemini is set to become omnipresent in every aspect of its eco system. Same for Apple Intelligence and Microsoft's Copilot.

I know it’s only a small drop in the ocean but I do think that being cognisant of these things is important. I am going to try not to use them frivolously (I had an amusing hour last year getting it to write dating profiles for fictional characters) because all I can do is be a bit more responsible.

Same as how I now delete all advertising mail that comes into my email account as it costs energy to store it.

Pissing in the wind? Maybe! But it can’t hurt.

A town near you

One reason data centre like Ireland is because of the climate, rarely gets above 26 degrees Celsius at which point data centres need cooling.

But they are huge drain on resources, power etc.

And once up and running only have a small crew working in them.

Kinda as delectable said, if someone were to try to avoid datacentre use then it's going to be very hard. A surprising amount of services/products these days rely on cloud/data mining/ai in the background without the enduser even knowing.

One of the reasons for locating data centres in Ireland is that they require far less cooling energy because of our temperate climate rather than places like California where ambient temperatures are much higher as evidenced by the current wildfires there. While water is used in parts of datacenter cooling systems it is mostly in closed systems where it is constantly recycled and therefore not wasted.

Even where it involves cooling tower evaporation the water that evaporates goes into the atmosphere as steam, is condensed and returns to the groundwater system as rain....its what Ireland does very well.

The water used to generate electricity passes through a hydro turbine and continues back into the river system or is used as steam to drive a turbine and is recycled through cooling towers or evaporates and falls again as rain.

Based on a recent government study data centres use about 0.14% of the total amount of water processed through the Irish Water system.

The above post was created with the aid of predictive text....AI at its simplest.

That's not entirely true. It does use more power but the water consumption part is way off the mark if they're referring to water usage in a data centre. Some data centres use chillers which rely on gases to chill the air. The ones that use water would mainly use 'free cooling' and not even need water, for the most part, due to ireland really good weather conditions for DCs.

Most of Ireland's data centers are crammed into the Greater Dublin Area, which already struggles with water supply issues. While data centers only use about 0.13% of the country's total water, their local impact is much bigger, especially during summer droughts when water is already scarce. Add in climate change, with hotter, drier summers on the horizon, and the strain on water resources is set to get worse if planning doesn’t take these challenges into account.

No need for a pipeline from the Shannon to Dublin if use was made of existing technology and the existing infrastructure to treat the wastewater from the Ringsend sewage treatment plant and recycle it as drinking water.

Faster, cheaper and more environmentally friendly than taking water all the way across the country which would still have to be treated to get it to potable water standard,

Ringsend overflows when it lashes

The site is completely hemmed in by houses in one of the most expensive area's in Dublin and can't expand

No one wants to drink piss

Think the plan for Shannon water is to create a lake in the midlands on an old peat bog

Then pump it to Dublin

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.

Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.

Yes, clearly Dublin City Council could take the lakes of toilet soup that they have and treat it to a potable standard. Wisdom would suggest that as they've been trying for decades to treat it to a standard where it can be released into the sea without problems yet Dublin Bay is regularly not for for swimming in due to pollution from this plant and other schemes that the City Council are involved in, I'm not sure I'm quite ready to drink that cloudy deliciousness just yet.

The government is well aware of the level of water wasted through leakage and brings the data centers in without solving it's own problems first.

No one is pointing fingers. Just a discussion about the available facts.

The OP wasn't about data centers in Ireland specifically either.

Perhaps one of the aspects the planners could consider would be to use the excess heat generated by data centres to provide district heating systems to heat public buildings, and community swimming pools in the surrounding areas. A net saving to all taxpayers by reducing the government's overall energy bill.

There were very specific plans outlined on what water infrastructure the additional tax intake was to be spent on. Those plans have been shelved / long fingered.
