As you know, there was a well publicised court case that wrapped up yesterday. So for the last 2 weeks you probably read about, listened to (via radio, television/ podcast) or heard opinions or even stories from "someone who knows..." someone Based on this you made up your mind as to innocent or guilty /
The point here is... what you and I read about and what an impartial jury focuses on can be very different. So what I'd like to ask is...
1. Have you ever been on a jury?
2. What was the experience like?
3. Would you recommend jury duty to someone else?

I was.
It was interesting to see how the legal system works first-hand, probably something every school class should go and observe.
I also noticed massive wastes of tax payers money amd time.
But I'd absolutely recommend everyone does it |

I have never not turned up to court when I got the letter saying I've been selected to do jury duty..... I wait to go through the process but I don't get selected, what can you do.....
The last time which was about 2 years ago, I was put on the jury but then I got informed at the court the next day that I'm no longer needed due to one person knowing the accused etc along with the rest who were picked..... they decided that they want to select a new set of jurors so that was the end of that..... |

I've never been summoned for jury duty, but I would go if I were. It's part of our civic responsibility in my view. My ex served once on a historical child abuse case where the abuser (a relative of the victim) was now an elderly man, my ex found the experience pretty depressing as one might imagine |

I've been called for jury duty twice, selected once. But had to sit and listen to the charges of 4cases. Can only imagine what the actual cases were like based on the charges.
Got released from the jury I was called for as another case was running over it's scheduled timeline which impacted the case I was to sit on.

I was summoned over the summer and I was so excited, I’ve always wanted to do it, but sadly had to get excused as I couldn’t take time off work (no one else can run the payrolls and people have to be paid) |

I've been called 4 times
First 3 I got excused due to work
Last time I went in for 2 days....never got picked and then excused.
Have been involved in a high court case ...very much an old boys club looking at the way it worked and deals done before being presented to the judge.
My barrister spoke ever so well but not down to me, always liked him and he ended up on the supreme court. |

I've been summoned for service 4 times myself and been on a jury once and have to say it was a brilliant experience
There you'll get to see how a jury actually works (versus what you saw in RUNAWAY JURY ) but yes, there are egos, people googling a defendants name (when you're told not to) and holding your tongue about a case from family and friends during its duration reveals loads about you as well /
A lot of people avoid it as if it was an optional root canal treatment but from it, I...
1. Have more faith in the judicial system (in general).
2. See that a court case can be as dramatic as a bunch of Shakespearen actors together
3. That what you read or hear on the outside world can be far removed from your experience as a juror
All in all, would highly recommend being on a jury if you ever get the opportunity |

Was called for jury duty twice. Both times I wrote a letter saying I was a witness in a sexual abuse case involving a family member and in my eyes I would find anyone guilty regardless of evidence. I never heard a word back from them. Nor have been asked since. |

Called twice, first time I was pregnant and due during the time I’d be expected to be on the jury, second time I went and wasnt called to sit on the jury.
But like someone else has said, I thought there was an awful Lot of faffing and money wasting.
I also saw the accused and decided he was guilty as hell with his attitude towards the gardai and the judge so would have been excused anyway. |

I've been summoned twice.
Got an exemption the first time as was needed at work due to the nature of my job at the time.
Second time I was raring to go and they cancelled two days before I was due to attend.

I was called and picked , case went on a week and a half
What I learned is nothing is cut and dry and you can’t form an opinion u till you hear all the evidence.
Also it’s mentally exhausting hearing graphic details about a case and making a final decision. |

I’m in the list for this year but haven’t been called yet, never mind being selected.
I was called once before and ended up having to go to court for about 3 days but was never selected.
There was a really interesting tv programme earlier in the year were they put 2 juries in front of a real case but reenacted from the transcripts for tv and each jury came up with a different verdict. Fascinating how influential the jury members can be on the verdict they reach. |

I was asked twice. Got a letter to excuse me once and the other time I got asked onto the panel but knew the person in question. I wouldn’t like to be on a case that last a few weeks and have to travel up and down each day and spend hours there. |
