So was chatting to a female fabber and the subject arose of pet names such as doll, darling, love, babe or as she says, me old flower. We were debating about pet names and we wondered what the good people of Fab thought from a male and female perspective if you call someone a pet name or if they called you a pet name and if you liked it or not.

South Down

It depends on the person and my relationship to them.

In work I often get "love" or "pet" or "dear" and - so long as it's not being levelled at me in a condescending way - it doesn't bother me at all. It's pretty much par for the course in retail, especially with older customers.

I get "love" and "bird" from my parents. Again that's grand and I use "sweetheart" with both my own children.

E has called me "love" or "lover" since day dot and I'm cool with that.

I'm less of a fan of being called a pet name by random man who I don't know, whether that's on Fab or not. It kinda rankles.

I don't like when men use the term doll it makes me think of women seen as plastic, also bird is no from me lol.

My old doll is worse it doesn't matter if it is directed at me from a known or unknown person.

Not a lover of hun, i don't mind darling or love.

Alicante Spain, and Cork City Ireland

You got to have earned the right by means of friendship, a shared moment in time, an event, etc to give a pet name and subsequently call a person by it!

Then it becomes a question of why and what purpose? Some are playful, some are caring, some are hurtful and so on!

I work with women from Belfast and they use the word Pet a lot when talking to me and all the other men

Think that's the only name I get called apart from my fab name at socials and even then it's just Bog

I use pet all the time. It's a term of endearment. I hate doll although said in a nordy accent..funnily it's quite sexy.

Baby, baby, sexy, hmmm no...
