The West

You would think they are shooting themselves in the foot regarding their tourist industry.

But I think it's more of a way of forcing their government to act on providing more housing and services in many areas.

Less and less of the money spend by tourists is going to the local population.

Look at all the hotels they are chains, all the restaurants are franchises. Same with the shops and service providers.

Yeah i get the housing issues and I think that the government needs to put this back into communities 100%

I think the people are in a catch 22 tbh

I'd support them. The country makes a lot from tourism, but the individuals protesting probably see fuckall of that cash, and only experience the downsides.

Definitely!! But they need to be careful and not turn nasty against tourists!! They need to protest on government buildings, could be the end of A Place In The Sun 🙈

I spent a week last month in a village in the Sierra Nevadas in Spain. The bulk of tourists in that area are transient and are only there for hiking, cycling or horse riding.

The tour companies have a policy of taking groups to local bars and restaurants for tapas etc in order to support the locals.

EU money was pumped into some of the villages years ago to upgrade roads and facilities but they stopped at a particular elevation because they didn't think tourism would ever be a thing in those parts so it's pretty obvious where the money was spent.

Each village has to rely on a particular local industry so the one I was in have more than 1 million tomato plants and supply the whole south coast of Spain.

The highest village in the region relies on curing ham and others grow figs and almonds to survive. Anyone including tourists can work there and help with the harvests for €60 per day.

The Costa del Sol regions etc have probably had enough of the Brits abroad etc but just a few miles up the road in the hills the locals would love to have those issues.

I wouldn't blame them about the brits abroad 🍻 total lager louts who respect nothing and no one, I think small village life would be amazing plus giving something back, only thing that would stop me would be the language barrier unfortunately.
