Looking to change my car in the coming months as do a lot of travel and the current one is in the garage frequently at this stage. Looking for something like a Hyundai or skoda, main requirements would be plenty of space for dogs/travelling, fuel efficient and comfortable for long journeys. Appreciate any recommendations people have! Perhaps I'll get flooded with people wanting to sell their cars now!!

Do you do much mileage per week

Anyone have electric cars?

And happy with them?

I'm lucky enough to have free charging at work but still sticking with my diesel at the moment.

Prices of electric cars still a bit high for my liking.

In saying that the price of second hand electric cars are plummeting.

Cork

1.5-1.7 diesel. Very fuel efficient for high milage and n enough power imho.

Depending on the style of car your looking for.

Have a renault estate, 1.5d.(90hp) Has been reliable, cheapcto run and lots of room/boot space.

But I've also heard that bmw 6 series,3ltr twin turbo has great mpg with over 300bhp

Stay away from Hyundai, nothing but trouble after 100,000kms.

Skoda Superb is a fantastic car for long drives, 2 litre diesel (avg. 140kms / €10) is decent economically, loads of boot space and the cabin is plenty big, Aldi supply their reps with them and change them every 3 years with full service history, you'll pick one up for reasonable money.

Outside of that, I see a lot of taxi drivers using the MG ZSev.

Stick with diesel and avoid EV's if you're doing heavy mileage OP.

Would depend on what your budget is?

Are you looking to trade in your current car?

What age or a car are you looking for under 5 years old, under 3 years old and still has no need of an mot?

From the info you have given what about a soda octavia vrs estate?

Don't rule out something like a kid sportage as Korean vehicles are decently made

Cousin has a Jaguar 2.0 180bhp diesel, I think XF, R sport and it does a phenomenal 75mpg on diesel!!

Showed me the stats and it's real.

Not sure it suits your needs but I'd be considering anything that has that engine

Any 1.5 Renault, but make sure you get one with a 6 speed, you won't feel that car using diesel. I average 6L/100km in town and on the open road it goes down to 4

The Hyundai are nice but have a weak engine, higher the milage more likely the problems. Skoda is basically a VW. But the VW diesel engines do have cheap injectors that can go. Suppose every car has it's issues here or there. Once it's looked after with good service history should be good. Try scoty kilmor on YouTube or other mechanic reviews to see what they say. Or a good forum read. I'm driving a 08 mitsubishi lancer the last 5, 6 years now and have done most stuff for it in the garden. It's an old car now, but hasn't let me down. Wouldn't mind the Skoda myself, a Skoda estate. Seen a blue one with gold alloys was stunning looking, almost like a Subaru look.

The Renault diesel engine is in basically everything now. The nissan quashqui uses it. Good going, loved the nissan. Renault cars though can be iffy with electrics, joys of french made cars. Same with alfa, Citroen and the likes. Bwm can also have alot of issues in the higher milage, and expensive parts

I have an ev with a 2.5hr / 162km daily daily commute. It's perfect for me. I charge every night for €4 so roughly €28 p/week. Servicing is roughly €80 a trip tax 120. I had a 172 smax- downsized to a mokka e. The difference is night and day financially. I was spending 150 minimum on diesel, and 600 a pop on servicing. I have travelled all over with my eV - plenty of fast chargers now about the place, granted they do put the cost back up to diesel prices but I only use them when socialising rather than my regular commute so overall still a huge saving.

My battery is a very minimal size - 230 real world 340km advertised. Uncle has a kia with twice the battery and has a weekly commute from Dublin to Glenties and gets there on one battery charge no stops.

I will definitely go EV again. I went for a cheaper option this time but will go for a good size battery in about 5/6 years when the trade in value balances out.
