Takes the Shein off
Jump to: Newest in thread
Should the fact that suppliers such as Shein who source products from companies that pay a pittance to employees who work up to 75 hours per week to produce their range of sexy underwear give people cause to think about what and where they purchase from.
First world sexiness based on third world slav*ry. |

Any particular reason you picked Shien?
All of our houses are full of products made in countries where worker's are paid pittance.
Chances are the phone you typed your post on was made in Foxxconn. Famous for their gargantuan manufacturing capacity and high suicide rate. |

I saw their name specifically mentioned in relation to third world employee exploitation in a news report today.
I thought it was somewhat relevant to people on this site. |

It’s a great question and we should consider the impact our consumerism has, but I’d also ask why the focus on one brand. Particularly when you yourself are wearing a brand that does the same to its “ workers” in Turkey and Cambodia.

A huge part of the reason we have next to no textile and clothing manufacturing in the UK is because production was moved to countries where people are paid pittance. Shein aren't the only company guilty of it. |

For balance I have to mention New Balance in relation to the sourcing of mens underwear from contract manufacturers in the Far East. But I haven't seen them specifically mentioned in a news report today. |

Think I was writing as you’d posted
It’s great when a report draws attention and shines a light, but the issue is incredibly wide spread.
Pennys are one the worst offenders in the fast fashion “industry “ yet no one blinks!
The boss of PLT just spent 2million on their wedding; whist their garment workers don’t earn a living wage!
Boohoo ran a sweatshop in Leicester, the uproar lasted a week!
Check out labour behind the label if you do want to learn more.

On a serious note those charity clothing bins are just as bad
The clothes are sold in poor countries, not given away as people think
It creates a market for second hand clothing instead of these poor countries having their own industries and hiring their own people to manufacture their own clothes thus keeping millions in poverty |

It also needs to be noted that the availability of plus size clothing (including lingerie) is, by and large, non existent or prohibitively expensive outside of fast fashion.
We should all be being less but sometimes we don’t have a choice but to buy what we need/want from manufacturers who are shady as fuck. |

Not even sold in many cases just dumped in landfill in third world countries. So many things wrong with it. |

Shein sell a lot more than sexy anything! But ALL sex toys are made in China! I'll continue to but where my money goes furthest. Did you type that on a phone that cost less than €10 to make too! Your entire house, garden shed is filled with products from over seas. |

So true, Many people, for so many reasons have no choice in where and how they shop. Corporate greed has a lot to answer for. |

Very true. Our western consumerist society is built on the exploitation of people in far off countries who were simply less lucky in the birth country lottery. Most high street and online brands move manufacturing to low labour cost countries to maximise profit and keep the shareholders happy. |

Its all about the bottom dollar and clothing is only one industry that exploits poorer nations.
Can I make a difference in how I spend my wages sure I can by buying localy produced products however when that choice is taken away from us by multi billon dollar industry its harder
Food production is now under pressure due to lack of conviction on our politicans parts theres a case of lands being taxed out of the food production industry due to its location
The cheapest food is produced beside the market it sells in however we have a law that says land within residental zone area will be taxed from next year at a rate aligned with its use as devolpment property a crazy suitation wher a farmer has to pay more tax on apeice of land than it can produce trough food production but yet we are importing the very vegatables that that land produces |

It’s easy to blame corporate greed for this which is a huge part of it but personal greed can be blamed too. We as consumers have the choice of where to buy products and as long as the demand is there these corporations will keep flooding the market. |

Didn't know about that, but sounds like an unintended consequence of an attempt to get farmers to release land for housing, which we badly need. So often doing the right thing can be so tricky. Like we need cheaper food in this cost of living crisis, but we can't produce food here as cheaply as they can elsewhere so we HAVE to import it. We want to optimise the output per acre, but at the same time we want organics which have a much power output per acre. |

Whatever about taxing land that's in a zoned area & needing more houses. We need to remember, there's no more land been made, so what do we expect them to do?
Elaborate, on the organic part, your talking about. |

"Are the clothes from Shein even wearable twice or just disposable
Practically everything nowadays is made to be used and disposed off as its cheaper than fixing most items
"
They are just as good as a lot of shops I have found. I don't know anyone who only wears shein products just once and if they do fair play to them for having such disposable income.I have several pieces that I have had for years and they still look good and not just lingerie either.
And to be honest I can't afford to pay big money for things like lingerie so I will continue to buy from where I get the best value.
It's easy for people to say buy local etc but simply it is unaffordable for a lot of people. |

Many of the goods that people flock to buy from our lovely 'Instagrammers' are white label goods, mass produced in factories like that, and they just slap their own label on them and sell them for extortionate prices.
I have bought myself fabulous gym leggings from Shein, after checking the materials on an expense brand, and saved myself 80 quid. They're the exact same product. |

Obviously land is a finite resource and so choices must be made housing Vs food. That's why we have the zoning system to enable planners to plan for societies needs rather than landowners interests.
Organic food is produced according to strict rules which limit what a farmer can do to maximise output (pesticides, fertilisers) which means less food is produced over the same land Vs traditional farming. That's why pricing is higher |

That's not exactly true! Costs are greater for organics! Plus membership and audit costs, feed prices, etc. But how has shein products turned into 5 threads in one! Every shop and store you can think off has products made in third world countries. Your house & office has them everywhere. I'll buy and make the best use of my money. |

True, costs are higher for organic production and yields are lower so the hit is on both sides of the equation. Also agree that we are so used to exploiting cheap foreign labour and their lower work conditions that you can see it in most of the products we buy. It's nearly impossible to avoid. I'm as guilty as everyone else, but I think it's better to acknowledge than to bury the head in the sand. |

This was a study done in a local supermarket on eggs, everyone walking in was asked would they buy organic or free range or caged most said organic, the rest free range, nobody cage.
The same shoppers on the way out all had caged eggs bar 1 person with free range, nobody had organic! The reason was I have a family every cent counts!
Injustice exists everywhere, Dundalk had textiles and shoe makers everywhere! It's all moved abroad, we have new industry, the wheel keeps turning, all we can do is not get crushed! Wish things where different but they are not. |

Didn't know you felt like that! It's kind of worrying
If I walk into a toy shop, I don't have the time, money or patience to research my kids toys of choice. Yes I know they come from China, but since I don't own a bank I buy what I can, where I can. For those of you who can purchase ethically I commend you! But I can't and freely admit I am not in that position. I will purchase where I get what I want or need as best I can. But I do enjoy my coffee so drinks dates are most welcome. |

Not sure if it's been said already but just because you pay more for something you ordered online doesn't mean the people, who made it actually earn more.
I also would happily pay more for clothes if the quality matches the price, which unfortunately, it very often doesn't. |

Great point. A lot of the more expensive brands just whack big prices on the same product made in the same factory as all the other cheaper stuff. I'm happy to pay for quality as long as it actually IS quality. |

I'm wondering how many people who say "why pick on Shein, all companies are bad" shop regularly at the likes of Shein and such?
Isn't that just defensiveness, not a genuine desire to be a better consumer?
It's absolutely true that unethical conditions are a huge issue. But that doesn't mean we can't cut out some of the worst offenders.
For Shein, Temu and such, the low prices encourage over consumption of non essential, low quality items that often end up in the trash. And shopping individual orders across the entire globe from China, has a massive environmental coat. Much less efficient than typical shipping to stores here.
It's actually a really interesting discussion in relation to swinging. I've found myself feeling forced to buy new items since we got into swinging. New outfits for socials, new lingerie for parties. And since so many parties end up being themed we've found ourselves resorting to online shopping for silly items like bunny ears and masquerade masks.
Instead of having a bunch of low quality items, it really is better to have a few high quality pieces and just re-wear then.

A company I used to work for regularly sent samples of fasteners to contacts in China and India for them to copy and manufacture.
They had to be made to the same ISO standard including tensile strength and stress tested for them to be legal here but apparently even when taking into account shipping costs, the savings were enormous.
In my current job we often have to get products via Amazon from Germany and France because margins are so tight and no matter how much we would love to only buy local it's not practical.
As a small 2 person business we can't afford to be ethical all the time but we do offset those purchases with supporting a few local businesses and in a couple of cases actually have a bartering arrangement. |

Panama and third place, green bean good as well |

Most of this I agree … I’ve had ladies at my shows actually say how can you support SHEIN while they are wearing Dunnes or Zara … pretty much every chain is made overseas!
I don’t think SHEIN is bad quality as I’ve said I have stuff from there 2 years an I get alot of wear my only problem is I buy so much that I have to throw stuff out!!

You will find very few companies that are actually as ethical as they make out. I worked for a large multinational here in Ireland. We made an electrical item that cost 12€ to make. Sold for 250€. After a few years the product was shipped to the chech rep because it could be made for around 3€. Also most of the parts that went into making the item were sourced from China but because it was put together here they could put "made in Ireland" on it. |
