Memories of Saint Patricks day

somewhere

As a child it always seemed to be cold going into town to watch the parade.

So on with the badge and off we'd go

On the bus with hundreds of others at the same time....sure they were overloaded by kind drivers getting everyone in to the parade

We went to clanbrassil street as my parents had friends living on the top floor over a shop and we could watch from their windows if it rained ....it rained a lot

Abel Alarms.....always remember the name as they had the best floats

Then home afterwards via the pub for my parents to have a drink and us kids share a bottle of TK red lemonade and some Tayto pub crisps

Drove into town late last night to collect my daughter

Thousands in celebrating the rugby and the weekend

But the shop and flat above it in Clanbrassil street were long gone but I remembered as I drove past the spot

around

I just remember the cold sad rainyness of grey streets, being dragged to watch parades I never wanted and still hate. The noise, the people, the cheering. Getting an ice cream as a treat in the cold and feeling miserable about it.

First Patricks day as an independent human in college got absolutely wasted at 7am and slept through it all with some American girl who had fallen for the 'kiss me I'm Irish' line the day before.

Belfast

Until 2 years ago I'd never seen a parade and I was only there because my grandkids were on a float.

We didn't have them growing up and the only memory I have is wearing shamrock to go to mass.

There were no trips to the pub or any big celebrations.

Apart from the shamrock it was just a normal day.

I've never had a Paddys Day off work unless it fell on a Sunday.

Never went to a parade as a kid, hated them as an adult taking my own, standing in the wet cold pretending to have fun. Thankfully they outgrew them quickly and now I can happily ignore it all and enjoy the day off in peace

In London in my 20s it was a big messy drinking day, the ultimate cliche of the d*unkard Paddies.

For most parades when I was small I was volunteered to take part of a float in our local parade. Be it a Viking, some sort of ancient warrior or just a humble shepherd, there was always something

Castlebar

My First St Patrick's Day in 1998 when my boyfriend brought me over to Dublin. We stayed in Jury's hotel and we had a view of the parade out of the window...

Great trip. My first to Dublin. So I married him

Used to go into Castlebar to the parade. Usually stay in the car of a family member & watch the parade go by. The odd time get out & watch it on the street. As topical for this Country to be raining.

As an adult now, haven't any interest in going to a parade. It's just like any other day now really, apart from not working & going for a few pints the night before or the night itself.

Never really did much for it when I was a kid. We really concentrate on making memories with our kids though.

Shouting " Go on you good thing " would give rise to suspicion alright

My old neighbour every year would lead the parade and as a kid we all use to help build and paint his float. When I was older I worked for a company (streets of art) and with built the largest st Patrick 17ft and walked him through the parade.

I have never been to a St Patricks Day parade in my life. Lol

We live in the country and memories for me were wearing a shamrock and going to mass.

The most important thing was being able to eat sweets that one day as we always had to go off them during lent.

For my own children and grandchildren it is a family day together.

The West

Sitting in my parents van in 1986 with the doors open and the blinkers on. I was allowed to beep the horn the whole time we were in the parade
